Comments: Even the brass monkey stayed in his car, that describes the weather.

Start of the organised practice trails and a double for the vice chair when Meadow Josie confirmed recent form and his latest addition to his kennel Cleverly, now renamed Meadow Dixie, won in a bunched finish.

Three close finishes were the order of the day, putting the evergreen Judge under pressure, and running one second faster than the juniors was Overwater Arnie touching off Canny and Bethans.

Comments: On a cold evening, I was welcomed with the words “wintered well” I replied “Winter hasn’t finished yet!!”  Spring seemed far away on this bleak Monday night but that didn’t deter 79 hounds from tackling the Lamplugh fells.  The juniors were dominated by the Rowrah kennel of Mike Watson and their numerous owners and Dearhams “Silver kennel”.  The Try Again – Darling litter of Persian Sky, Bay and Gold were 1-2-5 and Silver Charm, after leading, finished third just in front of the “red ‘un” Thorn Dancer.

The seniors were dominated by three of last seasons top juniors- Fireman Sam led but Endure passed him in the last 50 with Thorn Fire, 10 back in third, Discard, for the older brigade, back in fourth.

Noted in conversation afterwards – there was, according to the owners, at least three pups that finished seventh.

Comments: Eleven Juniors faced the starter for the first of Cunswick Fell March trials.  After an early scale, Huntsmans Kracka poached a good lead and won by a distance, after making a couple of errors on the finish the remainder finished all together led by Jazz Band.

Russ reported that he had added a bit more ground consequently the Seniors ran it quicker than last year.  Pips Spirit held on to beat Black Eyed Pea by a head with the other 32 close behind.

Quite a challenge for the judge and his two catchers- when it came to the result second to sixth sorted but nobody knew what had won.

Comments: Wild and cold at the top of Coniston and this week a new longer trail was laid. There were six pups and as they set off it was the Rosthwaite youngster Bewitched that was leading the way. Coming over the shoulder through the top of the fell and the Napier & Farren’s Foxparke Mystery had opened up a good lead which she maintained dropping in off the ‘bell’ but the chasing bunch were in hot pursuit and the leader must’ve made a miss in the bottom because when they came into sight on the finish it was Christine Brownlee’s Menorah with the advantage and the Borrowdale bitch finished well to beat the Jackson & Loan’s Bewitched by a couple of lengths with Eric & Marie Cockbain’s Marlou a similar distance adrift in third. Foxparke Mystery took fourth and these were the only finishers.

Nineteen senior hounds took their chances and George Birkett’s Langdale Ranger won very easily – coming home a distance clear of the Oldcorn, Hopkins & Petersen’s Pips’ Spirit who in turn was nicely ahead of the Burrow, Hodgson & Bell’s Debra.

Comments: The ground had thawed sufficiently for both the long and short trails to be run at Coniston but Mother Nature was conspiring in other ways as it was misty so we couldn’t see how the races developed. However, the hounds, particularly the pups for whom it would be a new experience handled the conditions well and there was an impressive winner in the long junior trail in the shape of the Bland’s Huntsman’s Kooga (Newman – White Diamond) who came home well clear of his seven rivals in a very good time of 9.16. The Patterdale youngster was chased home by John & Val Loan’s Lone Rebel (Jacob McClink – Malinda) and Les Tyson’s Lady Anne (Cannavaro – Dairy Diamond) who in turn were nicely ahead of the rest of the bunch.

There was another easy winner in the senior trail. James & John Oldcorn’s Cark two year old Dark Ruby had drawn away from the others and appeared out of the mist in splendid isolation. The Alec & Jackie Steele trained Capetown came through to take second place just ahead of the Bland & Barrow’s Huntsman’s Jenny. There were 26 runners and the time was 9.06.

There were only three runners in the short puppy trail and victory went to the Napier & Farren’s Foxparke Mystery (Cannavaro – Westgate Lark)who had drawn clear of Petersen, Kenny, Oldcorn & Hopkin’s Jade’s Jem (Cannavaro – Dairy Diamond) and the Dawson’s Paloma Faith (Cracking Thorpe – Cracking Moment). In the fifteen strong senior trail, the Lyon’s Black Eyed Pea was the comfortable winner and he led in Jack & Simone English’s Rooster and Les Tyson’s Sovereign. This coming weekend Coniston will be held on Saturday at 2.30pm as it is the Keswick area presentation at Rosthwaite on Sunday at 11.15am.

Comments: It was initially cold, wet and windy upon arrival at the car park up the Old Man but fortunately it faired up before the trails began and the mist lifted enough to be able to see how the races unfolded. In the longer puppy trail, eight hounds took their chance and four of these had begun to pull away by the time they came along the trod adjacent to the field. The Huntsman’s pair Kooga and Kraka were sharing the work and they had Les Tyson’s Lady Anne and John & Val Loan’s Lone Rebel for company as they set out on the second half of the trail. Round the corner onto the finish and the quartet were closely grouped and in a good finish it was the Bland & partner’s Huntsman’s Kraka (Newman- Silver Dollar) that just took the spoils by a couple of lengths over Lady Anne (Cannavaro – Dairy Diamond) with Huntsman’s Kooga (Newman – White Diamond) a further half length back in third. The time was 10.05.

In the senior trail, the Pawley & Garritty’s Songbird led going up the back of the bell and had opened up a good lead coming back through in front of us and she was being chased by Huntsman’s Jenny and Pip’s Spirit. Into sight on the finish and Huntsman’s Jenny had taken the initiative and ran out a comfortable winner in the end completing a winning double for the Patterdale kennel. It was close for the other places but the Oldcorn & Petersen’s Pips’ Spirit just took second with Barbra Leopold & Corey Wilson’s Wheres Wallie third and Songbird fourth. There were 19 runners and the time was 9.20.

None of the four pups completed the short trail but there were 18 in the senior trail and it was Nicola, Danny & Katy Lyon’s Black Eyed Pea that took the spoils by a few yards ahead of Barry Laidler’s Sugar Ray (no secrets here Baz!!) and the Saunders, Pounder & Appleby’s Lady Bethan. The time was 4.21.
