1st December 2025 – Barry Laidler

I write to let you know that Barry Laidler passed away yesterday after a short spell in hospital. Barry had been a long standing member of the Hound Racing Association attending from a young age with his father and mother and his brothers Roy, Patrick and Tom. Over the years they had many dogs and had many adventures both running and promoting hound trails in the south lakes area. One of his most favourite hounds was Bestmate who won the International Puppy race at Gamelsby along with his other hound Winterfell who won the Senior Championship title a couple of years ago which was one of Barry’s proudest moments. Barry was a member of the South Lakes Area for many years and until just recently held the position of Chairman. Barry was also Chairman of the Hound Racing Association for twelve years and was made a Life Member when he stepped down. Anybody who knew Barry and regardless of his diagnosis of Parkinson’s could not be in any doubt of his determination to enjoy and pursue the sport he loved despite what life had to throw at him, he was a true inspiration to others not to let life get you down. He was quick witted and retained his cheeky sense of humour right up to the end, he will be missed by many. Our thoughts and condolences to Caroline and Barry’s wider family.

22nd November 2025 – message from Whitehaven Area

It is with sadness that i share the news that Joe Mather has passed away, Joe had hounds for many years with his most recent one being Denver, past hounds included Bandrake reliant. Joe and his wife Rita used to have the Fox and Hounds at Ennerdale and you were always guaranteed a good crack about hound trailing and the different hounds running at the time. RIP Joe think of the family and friends at this sad time.

Thanks Christine
