More titbits.

James and John Oldcorn were sat in their car , minding their own, when the peace was broken when the HTA’s vice chairman opened the back door and  put his hounds in. Same colour ,same make but parked in a different spot , an easy mistake to make- cobblers!

Fun and games at Kirkstone Pass last week, official scout was cut short when attempting to find out how many runners there were in the first trail.

Then Galemire Grace was presented with the trophy in memory  of the late Sally Simpson by her son ‘Pip ‘only to discover it should have gone to the pup winner.

Then some sheep escaped and ran down the main road,- a fox upset the first three in the non- winners and some wag posted that a new foxhound pack , the KPFH had been formed.

Our American friends enjoyed themselves at the HTA’s highest venue, judging by the noise they made as the hounds crossed the road, they actually were quite useful as unofficial scouts-as they stood in the road.

There’s no hiding place , ask Steve Riley as he stood by the tea van at Cold Fell and a cyclist rode by ,’ Hey Riley you rogue’ he shouted.

I know it was only a non- winners but nevertheless first three at Marton for the Napiers and the Foxparke Clan and looking at the times if they had run Mamma Mary and Honky Tonky, they might have had all six tickets.

Our Ex- Chair has retired and his new vocation seems to be judging , apparently at Shap the camera battery failed and he used his phone. What to do – to ring Keith ,John and Carol and ask them who won?.

A bit since we had a prize for ‘hat of the week’ but that thing ‘Swannee’ had on his head on Sunday will take some beating.

Throat lozenges for Russell for shouting for ‘ Hilda’ from the first showing in the pup maidens on Sunday, poor lass she finished last.

Things that are going on.

Representatives of the HTA had a productive meeting with the Caldbeck Commoners and the Lake District national park officers on Thursday regarding the future of trailing on Caldbeck Common.

Also in the news , although nothing to do with hound trailing , just food for thought – the Australian state of New South Wales is about to ban Greyhound racing on the grounds of cruelty.

The festival of hound trailing on Saturday and , unless sponsors are forthcoming, this could be the last one.

On the subject of sponsors the Committee is in possession of two coins donated by Hamish Rose valued at around £1000 . This very welcome donation is to be used to sponsor a trail meeting in which any profit will be equally divided by the HTA and a charity of our choice.

Grasmere sports and show will soon be here and the Chairman has negotiated an increase in prize money for the three short trails, which will be £150 and £320 for the seniors, this means that the trails will be all to pay and that is £7 prepaid. So it doesn’t matter how many hounds or passengers or whether you are married  or not .

On Sunday the Committee will meet to pick a venue for the Premier trails , Shap and Buttermere are the venues put forward.

Finally Horse and Hound channel television was at Helton on Monday night included in the interview was an ex- bookmaker, a part time librarian an offcomer from Oldham whoes claim to fame is he was  the first person to run in the Everest marathon with a pacemaker. Unfortunately that isn’t so because the first person to achieve that was Sir Edmund Hillary with his pacemaker Tensing Norgay.

Owt happened this week ?

Owt happened this week ;

I didn’t know that ,whilst attending to a roadside thorn bush at Dearham on Tuesday week, I dislodged my ‘ flat hat’, on returning to the same place on Thursday I found it nestling in the bush where it had perched for two days, untouched and dry.

The lane into Marton trail field looks to have a firm edge to it , well! it hasn’t – ask Geoff and Barbara Jones as they drove into on Sunday and nearly disappeared.

One of those days was Sunday- hands up how many of you drove home minus your trousers.

Neil and Robin?  Malcolm Holmes ? I would have but didn’t want to get Caroline to excited!!!! LOL.

Message from Bill AKA ‘ Scrunt’ thanking ‘tuts’ for not winning a trail whilst he was on holiday..

Thinking of arranging a charity cricket match between two selective teams from the HTA anybody willing to play let me know – two up to now ( slip catchers ) probably played at either Windermere or Ambleside  on a free Sunday in August , Sept

The advert for the International trail produced by the CCCHA ( Irish HTA) has a photo of hounds depicting each grade of trail for the veterans instead of a hound they have  put a picture of Joe Simpson on the website. LOL.

International trail at Tallentire Hill on Saturday 25th June

The International trail will be held at Tallentire Hill on Saturday 25th of June and under the guidance of the Cockermouth and Workington Area , chaired jointly by Neil Brown and Phil Graham, ( Neil wanted his name first). An Odd snippet or two.

Received a complaint from ‘Jenny’ not Bland but’ Rascal’. How can you describe a former champ as ‘well rounded’. Well the answer is if your carrying a laal bit overweight then that is the politest thing to say ,unless -a rather colourful description used at Kirkstone last week to describe a similar condition but that might offend the hound!

Who should turn up at Grasmere non other than ‘twinkletoes’ Ned Bainbridge , famous for calling to one of Wils Troughtons hounds as it romped to victory only to see it respond to the call and veer towards him ( something like that) Nice to see you Ned (keep coming)

Apparently He was at Goosewell on Monday and stood next to me and neither us cottoned on.

Caught up with Richard Allen, retired farmer, at Goosewell on Monday, told the tale of trying to get a cemetary on the finish , had the local planners on his side but somebody put the ‘oar’ in, I can’t imagine why ,looking over the view of Threlkeld. Helvellyn, St John’s, and in the middle –  A Graveyard.

Marton on Sunday , West coast travellers turn left in Askam – Ireleth Brow and eastern travellers , Ulverston to Lindal turn right up Pit lane. Or do what I did google map and then follow the trail signs. (Simples).

Congratulations to Graham and Lisa Whitfield on the birth of their daughter Hollie Ann, well done, – now back to priorities – Tan its time he was Yan.

Titbits.

Just to clarify ‘ running out of petrol’ Jim Batty has a habit of -not keeping his tank full I mean! ‘ what’s the point of having £ 10’s of ‘juice’  when the £10 could be put to better use . Anyway on Monday he got as far as Holmrook on his way home – when,- Phut – phut – phut went the motor phut- phut- phut went the car and so on. He hitched a lift in a ‘ Merc’ to Millom just in time for his sausages.

Now there is another tale- because he has done it again, burnt the sausages.

Peep..Peep,Peep went the reversing sound of the bin wagon ,or so Jim thought but it was the smoke alarm not the bin wagon and once more burnt offal.

Well done Mark Steele on completing the three peaks at the age of thirteen, the three peaks, Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon, a remarkable achievement and so say all of us!

Talking about the Steeles after a mishap on Thursday at Buttermere, Tony was heard to say’well there’s summat for your website’ .’No Tony!I wont mention it ‘ was the reply – just because you had your backdoor smashed in doesn’t make it headline news.

Picture of the week David Studholme stood on Lamplugh trail field , dog lead around neck, staring forlornly up the fell , thinking what the f*** is ‘lynchy going  to say!.

More Titbits .

Discard had won the maidens at Bridekirk and it is well known in trailing circles that Terry is not photogenic, so with ‘tongue in cheek’ I approached him with the words ‘ Photo’Terry!  the answer is unprintable.

Anybody visiting Millom and has witnessed the fire engine flashing by on a ‘shout’ will  be glad to know it is nothing important – only Jimmy Batty’s sausages turning black in the frying pan for the fourth time.

Donald you’re hound has just somersaulted over a fence at the road crossing ‘ was the message from the scout.’ Bloody hell ‘,replied Donald  ,’ that would be difficult  it’s in the car I’m running it later.’!

Anybody spot Steve Riley in blue shorts at Bridekirk on Monday- Linford Christie!!!!!!

Report. A warm evening greeted a good crowd to Potters Park, adjacent to the ‘Leaps’ and venue of the festival trails. 125 hounds took part not bad for a Monday night.

The seniors and Thorn Dancer notched up win Number seven with a length victory over course winner Jenny’s Choice. At  the second last road Jenny’s had a few yards over A lemon and white followed by another lemon and white then ‘Arnie’, the problem was that they all came wide , some crossed in front of me some behind and according to abacus some didn’t cross at all.

Stopped on the field for the rest of the evening and in the junior trail – General James won by the proverbial mile – how? well it was plain to see , they all got wrong , some a lot more than others , the ‘general ‘ was one of those but put himself right got a ‘few yards’ and the rest never saw him again . When they appeared on the finish there was a ‘heap’ and to confound things the majority went behind the Judge.

Onto the maidens and no mistakes – Come Home Alfie , one of the two maidens that got round last season and putting his Knowledge to work collared Trooper Thorn on the line , first success of the season for the Crowe family ( beats ironing anyday) ,Sambuca was third and long time front runner Jazz Band just made sixth ( prize money ?)

The last trail an All-In comprising of most  that were desperate for a run , some that won last week, one that took its pads off on Saturday (see report). Anyway the video shows the first 20 to finish, if you know them ? Led in by Thorn Fire- Venus and Endure.
