Report. A disappointing entry for the seniors when only four faced the starter. Nevertheless Miterdale steel and Bounty provided the crowd with a close finish in which “Steel” prevailed . The other runner Westgate Autumn was still at large after the final whistle. The senior maidens kept to – gether and Carrick passed Fireman Sam on the flat finish.

A close finish for the non-winners saw Eden Raine head O’lll Blue eyes with the ticketing hounds close up. Copperfield came in front and only had to finish in the first three to collect £125 , finish fourth to tie so he decided fifth was near enough.

Report. I suppose the shock result of the night was that “Nimrod ” was beaten by his kennelmate “Novice ” It had to happen sometime perhaps this was the apt moment as the all-in bookie went   ” without ” Nimrod , who incidentally led down the fell only to appear on the finish in second place.

The teatime senior trail proved to be a dual up the hill , Jenny’s Delight and Miterdale steel  at it ” hammer and thong. Delight getting the verdict by a head with Marlou in third.

The open restricted and  Veterans were both won in convincing time by Lone Rebel and Bedazzled and for those who ” Go By The Clock ” Lone Rebel was faster by one second.

Report. A bit of a sameness as once more Silver Dusk and Rhythm from the Abram/ McMaster Dearham kennel scored a double and Breeze held off the challenge of Rita in the last race.

In the seniors the odds on favourite was challenged on the run in by first Meadow Josie and then Mystery Bound, who, if she was running off petrol instead of diesel might have won.

This is a reference to the note on the petrol cap of the Farren’s  van

In the pups the camera was called on to sort out the result as six hounds crossed the line together, it transpired that joint favourite Rhythm had won by a finger from Tom Thumb and as reported, Breeze, with a following wind , put a smile on Wish’s face when she beat Rita and Kinniside Beauty.

Report. The penultimate meeting of the 2018 season for the Carlisle and Penrith area Committee. Shap situated under the Wet Sleddale  reservoir, a popular venue and well supported , a shortage of bookies but the weather is a shade better in Tenerife.

Anyway the Queen turned up as if by Magic and as a Superstar she has a lone Rebel in the shape of Philip. Couldn’t fit Nimrod in.

The Queen minus Wendy held on to beat the challenging Persian Bay with Canny Mover in third , these three were clear of the remainder.

The maidens had an end of season look about it as only seven took part – the favourite Huntsman’s Magician , now back at Glenridding, beat West Tip.

The pup trail was another easy win for champion elect Huntsman’s Nimrod, the entertainment in this race was provided by Cracksman who paddled about just yards from the tape and gave away second place much to the delight of one anonymous punter from Millom.

The non- winners and  most of the runners were on the finish together and it was Super Star that emerged from the pack to win.

Lone  Rebel completed the day winning the restricted trail and landing a few late bets to the wily punters.

Report. Silver dusk and Mystery bound had the senior trail to themselves and although ” Dusk” was slowing down she still had enough to hold off the late challenge of “Mystery”

The pup trail was a bit more open and once more coming out of the pack was Rhythm to win from kennelmates Ranger and Rover.

One of the popular hounds in training ” Fireman Sam ” finally got himself over the tape in first position although it was a slow walk , Captain Jack was second after making a blunder at the water jump.

JLS , course specialist was also another popular winner holding of the challenge of Breeze for his genial owner JLS.

In the veterans Meadow Dixie, responding to the plaintive cry of the Vice Chair beat the Area’s Chair Issabella , keeping up her Veteran Championship challenge.

In between winds , Ali and Bronagh, we had Fellside and running like the wind was ” Geoffrey” aka Miterdale Steel re- routed from Low Place, he led at Calebreak from Queen, who ran rather wide approaching the tape otherwise she would have been crowned the winner, Tuesday’s first and second were third and fourth.

In the pups Huntsman’s Nimrod had her colours lowered by New Agenda , who won by a 100 meters and a similar distance  between the minor places .

Onto the final race and it was “van -near bad light stopped play, I was perched on the hill overlooking the finish and it seemed that the race was between three hounds until one spotted West Tip with a lead halfway up the last hill but he was stopping rapidly and  Carrick got up to win.

Report.  I do not know where that wind is coming from but I certainly know where it’s going. Metaphor which was aptly applied to last night’s conditions and considering the wild weather the hounds coped extremely well; hardly putting a foot wrong.

The seniors saw Persian Bay holding her form with a head win over the rejuvenated Canny Mover  , the veteran trainers Lynn and Norman Brown bringing off another double when Amber Bay won the non- winners. Huntsman’s Nimrod  stretched her lead in the puppy championship with a ten meter win over the Dearham pair= Rover and Rita.

Report. I suppose that a good indicator of good- decent trails is the comparisons of the times in the short trails. IE  16.21–16.32,-16,10, Those were the times today and of course were good trails – not as good as the weather , a September Sunday in the sun.

In the seniors four hounds established a lead and the odds on favourite Silver Dusk duly obliged with a narrow win over Meadow Josie.

Tom Thumb made in two in the week when he finished alone in the  puppy trail,  where Babycham finished fast to deny Rover of second Place.

Again it was the stronger on the uphill finish that gained the day and in the maidens and restricted events ,Cracking Spirit and JLS were both the victors.

Now a tale that I promised not to tell::

Report. What with tents, toilets, runners, ramblers, dogs, hounds, uncle tom cobbley and all, it was like Piccadilly circus on a bank holiday.

The trails and the run of wins coming out of the Glenridding/ Patterdale kennel of Denise Bland shows no sign of abating and she scored yet another double with Jenny’s Aura a 50 meter winner and Huntsman’s Nimrod a 100 meter winner.

The closest finish of the afternoon was between Zola. and West Tip, Steven Irving’s charge getting up on the line, but he owns and trains the second as well.
