Report. 30 runners- 27 and 26 three trail meetings over the weekend, needs to be sorted.

The seniors at Shap developed into a two hound race with Washington leading on the downhill finish only to be passed in the closing stages by the joint favourite Jenny’s Aura.

And only three pups , the novelty betting this time was well wide of the mark as Major won by 20 yards that’s a long way from the last wall indicated .

Sparrowmire Angel in the open maidens had the race by the scruff of the neck only to stop inches from the tape, then turn to meet her nemesis in Yogi Bear and Westgate Autumn , in the end she settled for third and the restricted trail was won in convincing manner by Persian Prince.

The six runners kept each other company for most of the trail, the lead  changing constantly and on the long finish all but Prudence was in with a shout, Silver Dusk led then Sambuca took the lead and the ” General” took up a challenging position and the “Otter” was in contention. Finally it was the favourite Sambuca that kept her length lead from General James.

Frankel , formerly Jazz Lyric, got his head in front in the senior maidens in a time compatible with the seniors.

In the pups could Miterdale keep up his winning sequence well No!

Mystery Bound recent maiden winner showed a glimpse of her winter promise and finished well to hold off Rio with ” Shadow “A close third

The puppy maidens and half the field completed the other half didn’t and this suited Sergeant James who had been having a bout of seconditis, holding off the persistent challenge  of Escape.

Billy Birkett opened his car door and announced that he had one winner and two seconds on board , no wonder the yellow gold car sank in the Bridekirk mud.

Report. Although I say it myself as the promoter” they were good trails considering they were run on the regulation mixture and the two Whitehaven hounds who made the long journey , a second and a fifth ( re Mr Riley). And a bonus for Ken Routledge ,with kind regards to Tony, half the field sprayed all over his car. By the way Jenny’s Aura beat Gracie by a couple of yards as they both had to pass Bewitched who flew downhill as if on a broom.

Novelty betting in the pups as they were only four- Colin bet that ” Major “had to win by two clear walls, he didn’t , but it was close.

The last trail finished in semi-light and looking forward to pushing cars off the field, didn’t pay much attention , but heard Russ shouting and Queen duly obliged. By the way if you go to the next ploughing competition you will see Joe Simpson competing , last night was practice time.

Report . Sandale, perched above  Uldale Common with the Solway Firth to the north, once more back in the hound trailing calender.

And what was in store ? three close finishes, two close to the clock. the maidens only 4 secs to spare.

In the seniors Menorah notched her second win in a row when she kept Persian at bay with a head win, Silver Dusk was third, the hounds were closely bunched for the first half but the last hill took its toll in this race as well as the other two , of which Red Will asserted on the flat run in to get the Better of black Legend, some hounds had a throw at around 5 minutes running which  virtually put paid to their chances.

In the last the clock nearly put paid to hounds as it was they had plenty of time ! If tempress had started her winning run any earlier then its no  doubt it would have been a short ‘un as it was she got up on the line in a photo between the first four, half a length ‘short head, and a length separating them.

Report. Betwixt the passes of Wrynose and Hard Knott nestled  in the valley lies Cockley Beck ,scenery to die for if you could see it,shrouded in low cloud and persisting down. Therefore not much to say except Jim batty thought Night Vision had won (seventh) Jenny’s Rose notched up her first win of the season.

Miterdale Shadow took his tally to 28 when he won by a distance and another first timer Casanova won by a couple of lengths .Kinnisides had a field day when all six ticketed and what attracted them to Cockley Beck, Magnet of course! ( mine host’s cans)

Report. For Tallentire Hill read Redmain and Vice-versa , same trail, shorter finish.

After her first success at Tallentire  Sambuca was made favourite and duly obliged after seeing off Wild Gypsy , second in the maidens at Tallentire and Eclipse in third an able sub for Endure , who is recovering from injury.

The pup trail produced a close finish ,once again between rivals Red Will and RIo, this time by a short head the verdict went Red Will’s way and Blue Solo ( with a little help from her friends was third.

In the non- winners seven hounds were in with a winning chance and Thorn Diamond minus Joe and Buzz (holiday) and with Denis in charge held off the late challenge of Foxparke Hooligan,who was accidently  hampered in the closing stages , Provincial was third.

The last trail, well! I was on my way to Fellside via the car wash and thank you to those that pushed me off the field apparently the combined weight was equivalent to a rugby team.

Report. A pleasant  afternoon in the Rusland valley, an odd shower ,nothing to worry about, cars stuck, so what!

If you were at the trails in spring you would have seen Songbird run out and run the trail in reverse, today she nearly did the same but at the last minute she swung left and went away with a good lead whish she came with on the finish and despite her lead being rapidly reduced by Jennie’s and Ladybird, she held on to record her first senior win of the season.,

The pup trail and as they ran the fell ,the crack was there is one on its own, correction there are two. The three hounds came on the finish Miterdale Shadow ,hardly visible in the elephant grass beat Escape comfortably by 50 yards and a similar distance to Jenny’s Breeze in third.

The maidens and Yogi Bear zig-zagged his way up the finish with Chavenel and Miterdale Proper plus plenty more in close attendance. Basically the finish was a no passing zone, first on the beaten track , first over the line.

Canny Girl won the restricted by 20 yards from Kerrymore to complete a disastrous day for one bookie and a trying day for the filmmakers.

Only seven runners for the seniors where Arizona and Sambuca shared favouritism but neither could contend with the finishing speed of former champ Prudence, who easily notched up win number five for the season.

The saying goes in trailing “when you win a maiden trail it is likely you win the next open trail and after Saturday’s win , Mystery Bound had to much pace for Bronco and won by a couple of lengths , Rodney Rascal was back in third and the only two that weren’t maidens were sixth and last.

The final race , after a heavy storm, had kinniside Joe leading a bunch and he kept on well despite running wide to register a win from Ben 10 and Westgate Belle.

Report; We start with the pups and; in a two hound race for the championship, it was good to see them in competition against each -other ,and!, we asked for a head to head  like their last trail, and what Happens” one was third , the other sixth. Having said that ,take nothing away from Jenny’s Breeze who just held on to the fast finishing ” Foxparke  Billy Elliot”

The senior trail and another course and distance win for Jenny’s Delight ahead of Bedazzled, these two had a comfortable lead over “Denzil” in third.

The last event and the tape had hardly been laid when the hounds appeared on the finish ,three of them had a good race to the line and passing Bewitched in the final strides was Menorah for Christine Brownlee with Overwater Jack in third.

Report: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again Wasdale , king of the lake district valleys cannot be surpassed and last night we threw in a few trailers and did you see the all electric car winding its way down the valley ( still plugged in ).

The senior trail got off to a poor start when  a number of runners were tailed off  after only five minutes. The rest of the field finished well spread and it was course specialist, and belying his veteran status, Free Spirit who won comfortably from the two birds– Lady and Song.

The pup trail and it continues tit for tat as Shadow countered and won by  50 yards from Overwater Stanley and  Escape , these were well clear of the rest.

In the last and Miterdale Prim completed the treble for the Low Placer’s when she won in a close finish with Westgate Rose and Yogi Bear.

Report: The senior trail was run in fine weather , the other two trails, the heavens opened and the last trail the finish was in semi -darkness, to such an extent that ,apparently Miterdale Steele won the race twice. He finished well clear and to a golden silence , crossed the line , stopped and to the shouts of “Its Showtime” lost from the seniors and therefore ignored by the judge, and by this time it had turned around and disappeared up the finish, only to turn and win the race once again , just holding on from Summer Rose , although it had already won , what would have occurred if it had been passed- as the Judge wasn’t aware that it had already won- until much later.

The senior trail and the favourite Marli just held on to beat Galemire Grace and the fast finishing Persian Bay, upturning recent form..

Huntsman’s Major once again finished clear of his rivals. Coming into the last dip He was clean. and light, out of the dip he emerged, Grey from head to toe.
