Report> Our special thanks to The Cockermouth and Workington

area committees for the amount of work put in, before and during the day. Margaret and Tony on the gate, Fiona ,starter and Judge and her band of catchers, timekeeper- Big John. entries by Margaret and Alan O’ Fees dulcet tones as “shouter out”. Trails manager Neil and Phil and the trailers Phil, Caspar , Ian and Darren. Thank you the farmers and landowners, the scouts, all afternoon on the road- Gordon and Mary – Dickie , Ike and Sheila. Tony and Neil and Neil’s Mam and Dad. Raffle ticket sellers Fiona and David. And a good evenings frivolity was enjoyed in Cockermouth and Sambuca’s all round was the shout, courtesy of the winning owner.

Not forgetting the sponsors . Area Committee. Supporters club and those who got paid donated the money back . All in All it realised a profit of around £300.

The trails- and would the hounds follow their noses or guess. The answer ,” no worries ” all of them adjusted to the altered finish and it provided the spectators with a ” cracking ” view especially those visiting and seeing hound trailing for the first time, all the way from Exmoor and Norfolk.

In the seniors Endure and Tommy’s Legacy held the lead as they came of Millstone Moor and stalking them in third was Sambuca. onto the long drawn out finish and although Endure persevered ,He hadn’t any answer to Sambuca’s speed and to the shouts of “go on Sammy” she pulled away to win nicely , Washington ran on for third making it a home 1/2/3.

The senior maidens and the well supported Cracking Gold had a good lead at halfway but was joined on the finish by Wild Gypsy and the two of them had a battle royal and it was in the final 10 meters that “Gold” got the upper hand.

Miterdale Shadow considered by many to be in trailing terms “ A Good un ‘” showed they could be right when he outclassed his rivals and won easily from Black Legend and still without an open success , in third place Cuchulainn.

Fourteen in the puppy maidens and fourteen on the finish together. I suppose you could say that all fourteen were in with a shout and shout they did- victory going to Ray and Glenis with Mystery Bound who just held of the challenge of “Knobbly Knees” Brian Rowlandson’s Blue Solo, Who, tongue in cheek, remarked” the finish wasn’t long enough” third was Provincial who along with the winner had shown potential as long ago as spring.

The Open restricted and yet again another favourite when Quiet Otter got the better of long time leader Dairy Lightning and a smiling Caspar catching the winner and collecting the winning trophy.

Only six in the veterans and reduced to five when ” Canny” came back and this developed into a two dog race and Westgate Belle ,helped by Artisans hurdling ability, ran out an easy winner for the two “Belles” Susan and Sarah.( brownie points)

Report.  Dare I say , but it was a fine night and it is a shame that the dog trials were cancelled. Nevertheless the show must go on and the trails did and the spectators were treated to three excellent finishes.

The  seniors got off to a late start doe to a breakdown on the A591 a number of hounds and spectators were held up and those who had time to take in the local scenery would have seen the “Gatepost ” bent but not shaken.

Three hounds came with a good lead and the poignant shout of Lady, Lady, Lady wer

e heard but to no avail as Jenny’s Aura had to much toe up the hill and she beat former kennelmate Jenny’s Delight by a length.

The juniors and an intriguing clash between Major and Shadow by any means the top two pups of the season. Huntsman’s Major turning out for the second day in a row had no answer to Miterdale’s finish and once more He beat Major, in a head to head race, by half a length, Overwater Stanley and Cuchulainn were close behind in third and fourth.

The maiden trail was won by Persian Prince , putting Ian Bell in the winning enclosure close behind was the Wilson’s of Troutbeck with Highness seeking that elusive first win.

.Also Ran . -Cool Return – Cherish – What Look – Starlight – Miterdale Princess.

Report: The three short trails, on what can be described as a “still evening” were run without mishap , the pups won in convincing style by Huntsman’s major , finishing a street ahead of Black legend, Summer Rose and Spring Rose ,” the battle of the roses” for the maidens and Canny Girl in the restricted, someone had to show Les where to go after winning.

But the senior hounds , in hunting terms could make nowt of it and for the second time in  a week some hounds returned to the start , these included last week’s Winner- Persian Bay and Galemire Grace.taking nothing away from the all the winner Marli, who’s time reflected was par for the course

.In laymen’s terms it wasn’t satisfactory and if there is an answer , we’ll find it but you can safely say it isn’t kerosene!

Report . On a fine afternoon and it is not often that Champion elect Endure has been turned over on the finish but he had to play second fiddle to Arizona, who challenged in the final strides to win by a length.

The maidens and hardly passed Fireman Sam just got over the line before stopping to answer the call of nature. a case of nearly been caught short.

In the juniors anyone of six had a winning chance but in the end it was Red Will that finished the strongest in front of last weeks maiden winner Mystery Bound.

In the puppy maidens Thorn Diamond led almost to the line where The McMaster / Abram charge Rodney Rascal took over and completed the second leg of a double for the Dearham kennel.

Report. 95 hounds took part in the  Wils logan and Birkett Lawson memorial trails at Cold Fell on Wednesday evening and on a fine night we saw the relentless march up the championship table of Huntsman’s Major, taking advantage of Miterdale Shadow’s injury, winning his 20th trail and is now only two behind, he gained a winning lead early on in proceedings and finished well clear of Foxparke Billy Elliot and Jenny’s Breeze.

The evening got under way with a comprehensive win for former puppy champion Persian Bay who finished clear of Marlou and Ladybird, the race was marred by the return of fancied Washington together with three other hounds, Liz. Mr Ant and Kinniside Beauty.

In the maidens Night Vision , handled by “photogenic Joe” , got the better of Summer Rose in the final strides with Lady Anne in third and the restricted trail went to the bookies hound Cartier on the evidence of the camera just in front of Miterdale Steele and Bewitched.

Report: If you followed the signs to Cockermouth Show you missed the trails if you happened to find Bridekirk then you missed the show. Well you missed the agricultural bit but not some exciting  finishes that had the spectators on their toes.

24 runners in the first two trails and a practical walk over for Champion elect , Endure who won by a wide margin from Arizona and Dairy Lightning not so in the maidens where Fireman Sam led over the final obstacle , only to find the long run in rather daunting and gave way to first,  Kinniside Beauty who then succumb to the faster finisher in Meadow Josie.

The pup trail and a rare defeat for Huntsman’s Major when he couldn’t contend with the sharper finishing speed of Crazy having her first win since early June making 10 in total. Rio was third after holding every chance.

The pup maidens and three hounds stole a march before the Redmain road and consequently finished alone with a fourth a long way back and the rest were picked up as waifs and strays. Of those who made it Sergeant James for the third trail in a row came in front only to be passed in the closing stages , this time it was Escape making it a Moore Family double.

The final trail of the afternoon went to Artisan who won comfortably from Quiet Linnet with Keystone in third.

Report. After a wet morning the weather changed and the sun shone ( a bit ) on Ambleside and five well organised trails ensued.

Apart from the puppy trail, which in its own way was exciting, there were close finishes .

We will start with the pups and if they had come straight what would the result have been, well it doesn’t matter because they did what they did, it’s history now ,it isn’t the first time that the pups have cocked up the finish ,nor will it be the last. The trail gets paddled about but as they are on the “whistles” they are expected to run straight as did the hounds in the following two trails.

Although it was a bit of a mess it takes nothing away from the winner Overwater Stanley, was he in front? It was a case of I am the Pied Piper “follow me” and follow the leader they did and to me it looked like the hound that took them wrong was indeed first over the line. All I can say with certainty is that Cuchulainn was second and his trainer used to be the  trail manager at Ambleside and took it philosophically with ” that’s trailing , that’s Ambleside ! as “beau”went back  up the hill .

The day got off to a good start for Alan , Jim and Ann Little’s   kennel , incorporating Denise and Jenny Bland, when the first leg of a double, Jenny’s Delight took the senior trail and with it the Jerry Meneaud memorial trophy and £160 when she held off the Borrowdale challenge of Bedazzled by a length,…

The senior maidens and a dual of the “Alfies”. David Crowe shouting Alfie for Come Home Alfie and Mick Moorehead shouting Alfie for Yorkshire Lad. It was a veteran versus a two year old and the old “un  proved the stronger holding the challenge of the young “whippersnapper” with Foxparke( Flintstone ) Yabadabadoo in third.

The pup maidens and won in style by John and Val Loan’s Steel End who collared the leader and won by a couple of lengths with Sandyman in third.

The final race of an excellent days sport was the restricted trail and the second leg of the double for Alan Little , when Jenny’ Rose held off the persistent challenge of Sweet harmony with Menorah back in third.

Report. Some of the surrounding district was hit by thunderstorms , Cold Fell was missed and not only that it was quite warm, makes a change !

Just ten for the seniors and odds on favourite Marli looked nailed on but she didn’t account for half the course specialist Buble who after a tussle to the line , won by a length with Persian Bay back in third .

Huntsman’s Major kept up his challenge for the puppy title with a facile win and the question is will he run to-morrow ?

Lily from Kendal valley stepped up her performance of last week beating C/D winner Layla and Night Vision. And in the restricted in the gloomy dusk the leaders were in great danger of bowling over the promoter ” Ructions” who decided the tape wanted straightening completely oblivious to the leading hounds. They were  Mr Ant and Songbird..  The feature of the evening was a Kendal double Buble and Sparrowmire Lily, the first “ticket” for Uldale Tramp, and the question “where’s the camera Bill”?, Answer “hung around my neck “.

Report . Back on the winning trail that’s Arizona who finished strongly to hold off the challenge of Quiet Otter and Liz . Prudence failed to finish the course and Kaiser got a ticket in the maidens.

The maidens, who felt the heat and finished tired, the winner and favourite was Wanted .

The pup trail and only seven runners and once more the final hurdle had a say in matters when it appeared that the four hounds that came together all fluffed it. Red Will came out best and duly won by a diminishing distance from Rio.

Mystery Bound for Glenis and Raymond finally, after  promising pre-season trials , got her head in front of another who showed early promise- Provincial.with Homeward Pride best of the Foxparkes in third .

Potter’s Park with its commanding views of Ennerdale, host of the festival of hound trailing but last night just the  run of the mill Monday evenings fare with just 43 runners, nevertheless there were two close finishes to wet the crowds appetite along with Liz’s sandwiches and home made cakes.

Jenny’s Aura turned around the form after finishing last on Saturday she won unchallenged from Saturday’s winner Washington and a close finish for third between Cool Enough and Kinniside Joe.

The puppy trail and Jenny’s Breeze beaten in the last stride on Saturday lost her maiden tag when collaring the favourite Black legend on the line and the maiden trail went to the foxparkes wiith a one /two with Yabadabbadoo and Hooligan ( Lunatic) in a bunched finish.

Report:  It is not often the video is switched off after only filming two hounds then switched on to film the rest. That’s how far the first two seniors were in front , Endure and Marli , by a country mile, the rest nowhere!

The senior maidens and lone Rebel “threw away” an early lead, apparently hindered by bracken, but still came with the lead on the long uphill finish but was run out in the latter stages by Step Up with ” Alfie” in third. Alfie, !Alfie !,Alfie! could be clearly heard from the last road,.

The pups and Huntsman’s Major making his second appearance of the weekend made no mistakes and won comfortably from Red Will and Nikita.

In contrast to the first trail all nine pup maidens were on the finish together and what price a light -coloured winner, they were 1-2-3 Steel End making up for the defeat of “Rebel” in a close race with Provincial and Cuchulainn

The restricted trail and as predicted ( see blog ) Little Messy made it three out of four at Helton,

Report. A damp start, a fine finish, that’s the weather not the trails.

To avoid the pups striking the senior trail, the shorter trails were first to run, the only downfall to this is that most of the crowd had gone home rather than wait over an hour for one trail.

That didn’t spoil what was an excellent day’s sport.

The pups and the top two pups took each other on again and this time” Shadow “showed just in front and held on tenaciously to a slender lead over arch rival ” Major” contrary to the amateur on the video. Kinniside Molly was third , the first of four tickets for the ” keep the bar open ” team.

The pup maidens and once more a close one with Kinniside Meg touching off Jenny’s Breeze on the line,” drinks all round ” was the cry ! And a special mention for ” Juicy Fruity ” The “Black’Un !  was that her first ticket ?

The maiden trail and the camera was used to split Tempress and KInniside Beauty with Sultan in third.

I don’t think that Quiet Linnet is photogenic , once again she came with a commanding lead in the veterans but the first two in the seniors had to rely on the camera and it couldn’t split Washington and Tommy’s Legacy. I didn’t see the finish we were trying to round up a couple of hounds returning on the trail ( they weren’t supposed to do that, that’s why the seniors were last.) C’est la vie !
