Report.  Thorn Fire made it six for the season and moved into second in the senior championship with a hard fought victory over the fancied Liz, she won by a dog length with course winner Quiet Otter close up in third.

In the pups four had established a lead and the outsider of them Foxparke Golden Balls took advantage of a mistake by Rio at the final obstacle, to win his second trail , by half a length from the favourite who recovered well and gave himself every chance in the last 50 yards.

The restricted trail and JLS came from behind to land the spoils at the expense of Fireman Sam and Quiet Linnet

Report . On an evening that could have been a complete washout the Promoter was highly delighted that although it showered to start with by and all it was a fine but muggy night.

Now I could report what was leading at halfway but on reflection ,after being told that Endure had won and Galemire Grace was second,  knowing them in running was a bit of  guesswork! As it was Washington held on from the resolute Bedazzled with Persian Bay in third.

Now the clash of the puppy table leaders , Huntsman’s Major and Miterdale Shadow and after a large scale at approximately half way . And according to some the leader has a good lead, but yet unknown. Out of the gloom came “The Major” at least 50 yards in front of Black Legend and Cuchualinn.

The final race was run in a fine mist and visibility was down to a hundred yards., and appearing out of the impending  gloom was old -timer Artisan just in front of Yorkshire Lad and Kinniside Beauty .

That win takes Artisan  out of the maiden class ,

Report. The first trail meeting at Shap for the 2017 season and a fine day greeted the supporters and five exciting finishes were witnessed.

The seniors and did the sheep put paid to Eden Rossi’s chance ?

Washington had led down the undulating finish but with fifty or so yards to go- sheep ran across the finish and badly interfered with the challenging “Rossi” but then “Denzil” stopped and waited , then ran on and held on for the win.

The maidens and all twenty appeared on the finish together, like an animated conga they came and Hunter’s Dale got the verdict on the evidence of the camera- a nose in front of Step Up with Levitate a close third.

It is tit for tat in the race for the puppy championship and not to be outdone by “Shadow” Major countered beating kennelmate Jenny’s Breeze to keep in the title race.

The non -winners and you couldn’t have a more popular winner than Ian and Mel’s Cuchulainn, He has been one of the most consistent pups this season  without winning and the lure of  special prize money and a trophy saw him competing in a lower grade and justifying favouritism he held on to beat Huntsman’s magjcian who just failed to pull victory out of the hat.

In the restricted ,and after , Russel had been admonished for shouting for the wrong hound, it was left to Sweet Harmony to get the better of Mr Ant and Persian prince ,in another close race.

Report: a condensed report from an unbiased onlooker.

A pea – souper of a day at Low Place where the majority of the afternoons sport was shrouded in mist and that had a reflection on the outcome of the trails.

The seniors struggled and came in at long intervals , the winner Miterdale Copper took 31minutes its kennelmate in second an estimated 15 minutes behind. Similarly the pup trail winner  Miterdale Shadow finished a country mile in front of the second,

Miterdale Steel made it a treble in the maidens and a four timer was on the cards in the fourth trail when another Miterdale finished first but it transpired it wasn’t the old boy miterdale one but Miterdale Proper which had run in the previous trail .  Ah! well you can’t win them all ! Billy Whiz beat his two rivals to make it a nap hand for Eskdale and in the last the veterans which provided the largest field of the day at both meetings, the winner, course specialist Black Eyed Pea  , putting a smile on Nicola’s face. Coincidently the pups and maidens were identical times unless it was to misty to see the watch !!!!

Report . In contrast to Low place it was a fine afternoon at Dean, wet to start with but a clear end.

Quiet Otter under the watchful eyes of Gordon, Casper, Neil , and Chutzy lead for most of the trail with “lIghning ” close behind and that’s how they finished with a ever present kennelmate , Sambuca in third.  I think I’ve got this right Chutzy and Casper shout for it , and then both attempt to catch it, Neil watches as he catches the third and Gordon rubs it down and collects the winnings,, or something like that !

The maidens and Keystone held on to beat the favourite Wanted, who was considered unlucky as they would say in racing” made a bad mistake at the last” Westgate Luther running in his first ever senior trail finished a creditable third.

The pup trail and a close finish between he first three , Rio held the lead and was challenged by Red Will in the final strides but held on to win by a short head with the consistent “Legend ” just behind in third.

In the puppy maidens , once again the finishing speed of Billy was decisive as He put yards between himself and Bronco and won easily and progresses into the higher ranks , where he might find it is still his cup of tea.

Ward Hall Thu July 13th.

Report’ Ward Hall with its commanding views over the Solway and the Cumbrian and Scottish coastline is a popular venue , when it fine! and it was when we got there but by mid trail time it was rather inclement , to be honest it p******* down.

It was fine and muggy for the seniors and Endure the 4/1 on jolly gave his backers a scare ( there wasn’t any!! ) when it looked curtains for him when Sambuca came to his side with five meters to go but he had a quick glance , saw the danger ,and quickened in the style of a Champ, Cool Enough and Washington had a race for third and likewise Liz and Silver Dusk for 8/4d

The pup trail and it sounded like half of Eskdale were shouting Buster, Buster. well ! it worked and Miterdale Shadow scored again to keep his lead in the puppy table.

Now it started to rain , the bookies changed the cars around, waterproofs were donned by those who stayed in the car and those outside ,just got wet ! And in the maidens a one/two for the Westgate litter as Foxparke Saucy Nancy bt Westgate Luther or should it be Luther stopped and Nancy had no choice!.

Seven hardy souls were sent on their way in the veterans , keen as mustard , “they are daft” said one  and” we are  bloody dafter” ! said another. Result 6 pts to Artisan.

PS 8/4d is the old prize money for 4-5and 6 .

Report. A fine night offering views that cannot be surpassed in the trailing world.

In the seniors a battle to the line ensued between last years puppy champion Jenny’s Aura and course specialist Marli and the former got the better of her elder  coming from behind she ended up winning by a couple of lengths . Galemire Grace came from sixth place to get third and a surprise package in fourth was the Settle hound Yorkshire Lad, his first senior ticket.

Huntsman’s Major is in complete charge at the moment and here he outclassed his rivals and won with plenty in hand, Nikita was second and Hawkswood third.

Bedazzle dazzle them in the last , a win for Carol and Stanley and Spike ( not a penny on ) Dawn was second after holding every chance with Sweet Harmony was third.

Ward Hall Tuesday 11th July

Seniors: 1 Thorn Fire, 2 Sambuca 3 Quiet Otter, 4 Washington, 5 Silver Dusk, 6 Liz .12 Ran Time 28.34 Also Ran: Wild Gypsy, Wanted, Overwater Halle, Langdale Ranger, Prudence, Kaiser Sosa, .

Pups: 1 Miterdale Shadow, 2 Red Will, 3 Bronco, 4 Del Boy,5 Impulse,  6 Ran only 5 finished. 6 Ran Time 17.30

Open Restricted: 1 Breeze, 2 Westgate Luther, 3 Quiet Linnet, 4 Step Up, 5 J.L.S, 6 Barncroft Gold 9 Ran Time 16.50 Also Ran McCoy, Fireman Sam, Rodney Rascal.

Ward Hall is fast becoming Thorn Fire’s favourite venue . This was win number Three and though she wasn’t as impressive as in the past , Tuesday’s trail was run in warmer conditions and the time was respectable. Sambuca was second and kennel mate Quiet Otter was third .

Coming from second place, the reigning puppy table leader Miterdale ( Buster ) Shadow; got up to beat Red Will and kept his lead in the race to become champion.

Finally we are starting to get used to “Wishy” shouting first and getting Breeze over the line in front of .Westgate Luther was no exception. With a following wind she justified favouritism , completing a treble for the punters.

Report: 99 hounds on a Monday evening, Cold Fell still popular amongst the trainers , supporters and bookies.

Once again championship leader Endure was hardly ever headed as the hounds made their way across the opposite fell, together with four others , they didn’t alter their positions and he held on to a couple of yards lead over Marli and the fast finishing Galemire Grace in third.

In the pups  Huntsman’s Major kept up his challenge in the puppy championship with yet another hard fought win. He didn’t have things his own way persistently challenged by Black Legend and the non- winner Cuchulainn, who’s turn must surely come, perhaps Kirkstone.

Talking about turns , Miterdale Steele running consistently for Ian Donaldson finally got his head in front at the expense of Manna, these two were nicely clear and had been for most of the trail.

The all- in and Course specialist Buble (bubble) brought tears to Wendy’s eyes when reversing form with Sweet Harmony.

Report. Potter’s Park the venue of the festival of trailing, not everybody’s  cup of tea. but , still, an excellent days trailing , especially if you won, Were the bookies smiling ? as they departed.

The proof of a decent trail is sometimes proven by the times taken and yesterday the five short trails were :

Res 18.22 Pup 18.24 V 18.25 NW 18.41 PM 18 48. That is 26 seconds between all five. Therefore it is feasible that ‘Billy Elliot’ could have won any of the four trails!!! That’s Elliot not Balls!

The meeting got underway with the pup maidens and Dancing all over his opponents was Foxparke Billy Elliot finishing like a train for trainer Stuart Smith and joint owners Stuart and the Napiers, and not forgetting Nicola Wilson, the second favourite beat the favourite Jenny’s Rose and Thorn Diamond which was the first leg of a day to remember for the Burrows, Reay and Satterthwaite family.

The non –winners and Susan and Sarah’s Westgate Autumn justified favouritism, one or two gambles went astray including Moi – Four of the ticketing hounds were  from the late bred litter of Kyza – Gypsy. This trail was the closest finish of the day with any one of the first four in with a chance.

The veterans and reigning veteran champion Artisan trained by Reg ( another) Smith showed there was life in those  legs when she held off the challenge of Free Spirit and course winner Quiet Linnet.

That was the second favourite to oblige ,would any thing come to the rescue of the layers, step forward ‘ Denzil’ in the shape of Washington. The well supported General James looked to have one leg over the line when taking the lead at the final viewpoint. Although showing in front he hadn’t the legs to hold off John and Heidi’s border bred Washington with Jenny’s Delight in third.

The senior maidens and as always one of the most competitive trails and as the hounds made their way to the finish there were plenty in with a shout. As they approached the finishing line I heard about a dozen different names called out ” So and So wins it ” Finally Hunter’s Dale was mentioned ( Batty, only because he was on )..Hunter’s beat Yorkshire Lad from Yorkshire and Summer Rose in third. Hunter’s was the first leg of a double for the above mentioned team and was well supported in the market .

The pups and somebody remarked only ten runners , well there are only thirteen pups that have won championship trails so therefore in reality 10/13 is a good percentage.

Hawkswood  swooped to conquer, the Little Langdale bitch owned and trained by Dennis Peare and Jackie Gill  ( Working )   Put in a sharp burst to take the honours from Rio and Black Legend   ( Now Who is going to take the photo ?

The last trail and once again the shouts were coming from ‘ Buzz and Jo’ and Molly makes three. Debra showed with a yard or two  and was in no danger as she streaked away from Bewitched, the second leg of that double ensuring the kennel trophy went to Abbeytown.

The Benny Kinsella trophy was awarded to Washington, the trophies were presented by Peter Fowler and Geoff Messenger and the Cockermouth and Workington Supporters club.

Report. On a warm night it was good to see our Irish friends once more and also a visit from former chair of the Aspatria and Wigton area Steven Fincher- both witnessed a comprehensive display of driving by the table leader Endure who won easily from a rejuvenated Prudence with Cool Enough in third. That was the first favourite uttered the lone bookie as he counted his loose change.

The puppy table leader was favourite in the next but previous winner Red Will had to much up his sleeve and won easily from Black Legend.

And onto the final race and as the previous two another easy winner – this time it was Wanted ( dead or alive) a nice reward for the punters who’s wish came true.

Report.  It was a muggy night at Ward hall, the visibility was poor, there was light rain and although at the time we were unaware that it was going to be a long night.

The seniors and once again Thorn Fire showed a fine turn of finishing speed to beat a surprising second in the shape of Wild Gypsy who was competing in her first senior trail- a progeny of the Westgate’s , not two year old until August and the downfall of a few bob on the third- Arizona.

The pup trail, what happened? we might find out , we might not , but all of them returned to the start and in my experience it looked like they had circled hit the trail the wrong way and ‘come back’ as they were racing and were practically in correct order.

The restricted hounds together with some pups got round but again, although within the time limit they were five minutes slower than average and the last hound was rounded up at 10pm. Not taking any shine off the win of Sunset Ridge, who came well clear of Free Spirit and JLS.

Report. A rarity on a Monday evening and the first midweek event to attract four bookies. Three trails to bet on and with two ‘ jollies’ winning perhaps a punter’s night.

Endure kept up his lone pursuit of the senior championship with a ‘bloodless’ victor. winning by a wide margin from Lone Rebel and Queen in third.

Huntsman’s Major after defeat in the dog produce was soon back in the winning trend beating kennelmate Jenny’s Breeze and wearing his favourite blue jeans was Joe Simpson catching the maiden winner Venus beating Spring rose and ticketing for the only the second time this season Sparrowmire Lily in third.

The all- in and this was a cake-walk for the consistent Little Messy, run three, won all three, all at Helton. The rest ran their own trail and were led home in Summer by ‘ Autumn’
