Report: The Premier trail for dogs was held at Dubs Lane Windermere on Saturday 1st July- The Dog Produce , and on a fine afternoon we saw the table leader and second favourite Miterdale Shadow, relishing the downhill finish , beat Cuchulainn owned by first timers Ian and Mel Dooley. The winner owned and trained by the Steele family from low Place farm in Eskdale, a place synonymous with winners, and in the words of Steph ” it was for my mum”

The day got off to a good start for the connections of Tommy’s legacy and compatriot My Way, they arrived in convoy, parked together and no doubt will party together. Tommy named after Tommy Crossland from Ambleside , Shirley’s dad and trained by her and intended Brian Graham stormed down the steep incline to beat Ladybird owned and trained by “Grumps Batty” with “The Queen ” in third. And My Way ,after a long spell in the doldrums, had a session with the”physio” sorted out his problem and won the maidens in fine style for Duncan and Amy , Miterdale Proper was second again and The Foxparkes were third.

The open pups went to Glenridding in the shape of Huntsman’s mist and in the most competitive race of the day , the Holmes family had a welcome success with Sweet Harmony. Both these trails were close finishes and the catchers were kept on their toes.

Report. 100 runners at Redmain ( must be the new mixture).

Could Endure strengthen his hold on the senior championship, the answer No ! he tried hard to hold on to a slender lead but in the end succumb to the faster finishing Thorn Fire, “Denzil” was a close third.

The pup trail and “Stanley” led for most of the trail but Miterdale Shadow ‘came away’ on the long meadow to register another win, Rio was third and Fiona’s favourite was fourth ” Golden Balls”

The open maidens and “watch your dogs” was the command as about a dozen appeared on the finish with a winning chance. In the end it was Wild Gypsy (sister won  Monday) who had a length to spare over Stand By and the all-in was a Breeze.

Just a reminder entrance to Thursday’s redmain trails is via the concrete road from Tallentire. The road that comes into Bridekirk trailfield from the north – instead of turning right to Bridekirk, turn left-and follow the yellow brick road.

Report: Just a thought on the question ” Is the mixture to blame for the alleged ” bad trails” ?

Lamplugh on Saturday only four finished on to Kirkland on Wednesday- same rags, same mixture, same ground only difference- the weather. The winner Overwater Roger fourth Langdale Ranger . which were two of the hounds that didn’t get round on Saturday.

Back to Kirkland and after 10 minutes four hounds were clear of the other three , the phones were busy- they climbed the fell ,stopped for a drink, the three at the rear caught the four in front, the phones were busy. ” Cancel the first call, it’s Crewe station- All Change “.

In the end , Overwater Roger scored his first senior victory over 100 metres in front of  Kinniside Joe.

The pup trail was a facile win for table leader Miterdale Shadow and in contrast the last trail was a bunched finish which went to Skelton hound Stand By  from Summer Rose.

Report: Missed the seniors, gallivanting around Dean trying to catch a lost hound.

The juniors were pretty well  in a heap : Until Black Legend stole a slight advantage and increased his lead to that of the trail field. Finishing in isolation , Red Will won the race for second and the race for Foxparkes was won by Billy Elliot in front of Becks. Wanted got up on the line to beat Keystone in the maidens and Saucy Nancy was the first Foxparke home.

Report. On a warm , shirt sleeve night in the stunning Newlands Valley– Two Questions – Why was the seniors 2+mins slower than the maidens and why did the first two pups veer of in the penultimate field. Some would say the answer to the first question : The maidens ran faster , tongue in cheek, but is it right? The second question , and a guess,  what about the catchers voices echoing?

In the seniors and if you are a “time watcher” then Lone Rebel has already finished, Jenny’s Delight won clearly from Eden Rossi , a good second ,a fields and dykes runner,. Not Now! and in third ever present Washington.

Next , one of the few midweek maiden  trails, on a dead rag and as reported; faster than the seniors , and a superior performance from ” metal Mickey” aka Lone Rebel , he finished alone  with Miterdale Proper in second.

The pups, and after Jim Bob had correctly identified the first three, and “Major” has no chance was told they are not the leaders but third , fourth ,fifth, the favourite and kennelmate are well clear. Is there a specsavers in Millom?.

Then to “cap it all” the first two swung to their left and disappeared from view but as the bookies were counting their money , they returned and still had enough lead to win easily.

And in the last the well supported Menorah , Christine and Victor Brownlee’s charge won in a close race with veterans Free Spirit and Huntsman’s Hope in second and third.

Report. No books, no SP, nobody won ,nobody lost, Jimmy Batty had a chunter then the night wouldn’t be complete if he didn’t.

Missed the seniors ;

Pups finished in order of merit . “Major notching up another win , this time he had to pull out all the stops to keep “Irish Raider” Cuchulainn at bay, with kennelmate Jenny’s Breeze close up in third.

Overwater Jack finished second to Yorkshire Lad in the restricted trail but was awarded the race in the “stewards room” . His kennelmate was next ,’ Billy Whizz’ a one two for the Crowe family of Eskdale.

And in the last Westgate Belle finished well to beat Canny Girl with Artisan back in third.

Also Ran  Dawn –  – Gambler – Kaiser Sosa – Chavenel – Foxparke Mamma Mary – Foxparke Invisible – What Look –  Dairy Lightning.

Report. A contrasting change in the weather from cold to very warm and this had a telling affect on the hounds.

The senior trail was extremely hard going and pacing yourself was a must as early contenders Try Time and Langdale Ranger ran out of steam and Endure who at one stage seemed an unlikely winner ( see Lynchy) stayed on to win from Washington. Those that didn’t complete were all accounted  for.

Missed the pups but Miterdale Shadow is back on the winning trail.

In contrast to the seniors the maidens came well bunched and Beauty proved best of the Kinnisides (apparently named after “sqauky”) and in the last veteran Free Spirit completed a miterdale double when beating Hunter’s dale these two were clear of the rest.

Report: 17 Foxparkes and four short trails all within 13 seconds of each other and a maiden winning a restricted trail, again! That was Ward Hall last night plus a first success for Thorn Fire and the first dead heat of the season.

In the seniors there was late money for Thorn Fire who duly obliged holding on from Arizona and Tuesday’s winner Endure.

The pup trail and Black legend looked a certainty with a few yards to go but Red Will put in a late charge and both hounds went over the line as one.

Breeze won the restricted trail from the favourite Ben 10,she was a maiden before this and a philosophical owner ” Wishy” said “a wins a win and having beaten the favourite somebody quipped ” you are walking home Wishy”.

Artisan a genuine priced 6/4 on shot won the veterans from Quiet Linnet and Westgate Belle- We might just have seen the International veteran result.

Report. The first meeting at the popular Grasmere venue of 2017 and a convincing win for Jenny’s Delight in the seniors , the Carlisle based bitch won easily from Ladybird and in turn was well clear of the third hound Menorah.

The puppy trail and once again a convincing win for Huntsman’s Major. He finished well clear of kennelmate Jenny’s breeze with produce winner Overwater Gemini in third.

The maiden trail and ‘sneaking  ‘ down the finish was Sultan. I say sneaking because a number of spectators missed seeing it. ” should have gone to specsavers ” , Miterdale Proper held off Alfie for second place.

Report. Right ! I’ve been in detention , wrote 100 lines I will in future get all reports exactly  as everybody wants them and by the way if I get everything accurate and all the hounds right . I will not be writing about them instead I will be backing them. ’nuff Said’

Ward Hall , trails organised by the Cockermouth Area , officiated by the Aspatria and Wigton area  Its about time we woke up to the fact that the HTA is one area and not seven , what ! with only 4 bookmakers in action , hounds travelling all over , the same people attending  whether the trails are at Corney or Oulton, I ‘ll set the ball rolling but there are a lot of goalkeepers.!

Back to last night and Endure showed he is back to top form when he held Thorn Fire at bay up the long ,strength strapping finish, a length and a half was the winning margin, the improving Sambuca was third and Persian Bay a close fourth.

The puppy trail and after running consistently since Christmas- Red Will finally got his way – in an extremely close finish with Kinniside Meg, Mystery Bound ,and  Black Legend, Kinniside Mel – Impulse,it will be worth noting that five out of the six were maidens! The International is just around the corner!

Onto the final event and apparently the lure of a previous run around Bridekirk proved the undoing of some and it was up to a veteran to show them the way home, holding off the challenge of Sunset Ridge was veteran champion Artisan.

Now a tale of £2.50. Mike and Dot Wilding  have been staunch supporters of trailing for a number of years and after a bout in the wilderness they are now in their  twilight years and having a great deal of success with their new acquisition ‘ Wild Gypsy’. But at Kirkstone after she had finished fifth her owner ‘ lost the prize money’ Ok! it is only £2.50p but it is of sentimental value.

So this afternoon on passing the trailfield I decided to have a look, ‘needle in a haystack’ No! there it was lying on the finish.

Happy Ending? No ! Finders keepers losers weepers !

Report.  A fine night at Goosewell Farm Keswick , derived from a sign on the road that said ” Go Slow Geese”

Eight seniors and that included three red ‘uns and Jenny’s Aura was made favourite but she was well adrift of the lead at 20 minutes where Debra led from Tommy’s Legacy. Onto the testing uphill finish and Jenny’s Delight and Tommy’s came together , the latter getting the verdict  by half a length, with Bewitched in third.

The pup trail and a facile win for Huntsman’s Major , he poached an early lead and finished alone , chased home by his two kennelmates. The third trall, the maidens and a win for  Hunter’s Dale, who should know his way around Goosewell as we spent a good two hours looking for him last season.

Langdale Ranger now residing in the overwater kennel gave Song Bird a few yards lead but overhauled her in the field bottom, to register his second win of the season

Report: The second major trail meeting of the season and the first of the two produce events courtesy of the Keswick Area ,held at Latrigg Top Keswick, on a grey , damp afternoon.

The major event of the day was the 2017 Bitch Produce and this went to the Overwater kennel with Overwater Gemini ( Langdale Ranger- Dark Mist)  owned by the Irving family, Ike and Sheila Walker. J. Abbott and handled by Emily Irving. The white bitch won comfortably after taking advantage of a scale, which resulted in four of the fancied hounds returning to the start. Second place went to the favourite Crazy and third was Kinniside Mell.

The day will be remembered as ‘ Glenridding’ day as the Bland-Barrow kennel comprising of Jenny’s Delight, Huntsman’s Major, and Jenny’s Rose won three of the five trails, the latter was having only her sixth race of the season and ‘ Delight’ was winning for the first time this season after winning ten trails last season and Major was winning for the fourth time in a row and is a ‘real’ contender for the puppy championship.

”  Right Desert wrong tent or right tent wrong desert “:   credit where credit is due and Jenny’s Delight has been kennelled in Carlisle this season and trained by the Little family and not only that Jenny’s Rose has been for three years .- So ,with a swift apology an amendment ,we will keep the original script but it should read as probably started life in Glenridding but now reside in Carlisle and as the Joe Cocker song says ” With a little help from my friends”

In the senior trail three hounds established a clear lead , due to poor visibility, identification was difficult but after talking with numerous ‘good kenners’ we narrowed it down to anyone that was entered. The money was on Jenny’s Aura but in the words of Cilla ‘surprise surprise’  it was Ex- kennel mate Jenny’s Delight who came with an unassailable lead , ‘ Aura ‘ was second and the Overwater’s second string was third- Overwater Roger.

The maiden trail and it became plainly obvious that things weren’t going to plan when they hadn’t shown under Skiddaw  after 15 mins duration. A number of hounds returned to the start and the rest were spread out like ‘Mondays washing’ as they negotiated the slopes and the numerous runners / walkers/ ramblers/. In the end it was Red Smith’s Accolade that claimed first prize” just” eleven minutes slower than the seniors. The produce was next and was followed by the dog pups and the restricted trail which were both considerably faster ,three and four minutes respectively, perhaps the longer the trail is ‘ on the ground’ the better.

Thanks go to the Keswick Area Committee under the guidance of David ( Spike ) loan , trailers, gatekeepers ,raffle organiser etc and financially the meeting made a small profit.
