The first of two meetings at Rusland, the picturesque valley between Windermere and Coniston, a hidden valley, or in trailers terms ” Where the hell is it “. . Turn left , turn right and follow the road to the “back of beyond”, And if you don’t succeed the first time then Try -try Again.

The senior trail and after 12 minutes and in view of the spectators Song Bird , took a right instead of a left and ended up going the wrong way around. Kenmore scored his first success at the expense of Jenny’s Delight and Persian Bay.

The pups and an excellent race developed between Miterdale Shadow , Black Legend, and Huntsman’s Major, they finished in that order with only a length between them but in the following trail Lone Rebel finished ” a proverbial mile in front “, apparently the stock at the final road had a say in proceedings.

The last trail the all-in could have been easily mistaken for a veterans when four of the six were of that ilk. Debra won for the young ones, she’s only five.

Report   Not a large senior field but it  included a two times champion, the current table leader, last seasons senior championship runner-up, and they were all put to sleep by Eden Rossi gaining his first senior success, he had a battle on the long finish with Prudence who he mastered in the last 20 yards and then held off her renewed challenge to win by a length.

The pups and last week’s winner Hawkswood was unplaced , the race going to the fast -finishing Del Boy and second once again ,Rio in front of Broncho.

It’s not often you get a fast-finishing non-winner but Summer Dancer is just that, he simply streaked away from Steel End and we will see how he fares when upgraded.

The largest field of the day was the Open Restricted and it was an easy win for Cracking On( spurred on by Bill )

Just a guess! and on a pleasant afternoon Carol Jackson and travelling head lad “Spike ” Loan struck with an 84/1 double with Bedazzled and Cherish, Bedazzled won rather easily from Thorn Fire’ emerging from the all-in’s’ with local Miterdale Copper back in third, and Cherish , a first year veteran, won in  similarly fashion from Irish Pride with again the local back in third.

Miterdale Shadow won the pups very easily from Cuchulainn , who was running here for the first time, and then three Kinnisides – Meg ‘ Molly’and Mel and in the last Miterdale Princess won by a few yards from Razzle Dazzle.

After his narrow defeat by “Atnie”on Monday , Tommy’s Legacy was made a short odds -on fav and after leading onto the finish was passed by maiden Kinniside Joe, Tommy was reported to have a pad problem but that doesn’t lessen “Joe’s ” victory as it is quoted ” the last shall be first and the first last”, The” General” led at Bowness Knott – ” Joe” was last.

The pup trail and once more the clash between the two top contenders and this time it was the superior finishing speed of Crazy that landed the spoils with another two Kinnisides in third and fourth.

The maidens and despite stopping and waiting ,Cool return after dropping back to second got up to defeat yet another kinniside this time “Beauty”

The All-In practice trail was next and Thorn Fire made six out of eight.

Report; Former Champ Prudence got herself back on the winning track with an all the way victory over course winner Arizona,. She notched up win number three and keeps her on course for this seasons honours.

The pup trail and a first win for Little Langdale hound Hawkswood owned and trained by Dennis Peare and Jackie Gill, still travelling in Jackie’s car after Dennis’ “blew up” at Bower. She showed with Rio and went on to win by a couple of lengths Overwater Stanley had a chance but disappeared on the run in ( turned up the fpllowing morning )

The favourite Eden Rossi duly obliged in the last easily accounting for Sweet Harmony.

Report: It was a nice warm day then somebody pulled the plug out, hell ! it was a cold night, the bookie shouted” three Golden Balls “, it was lucky to have three..

Eight seniors and reduced to five after 13 Minutes ,then to four and by the finish – two, as Overwater Arnie and Tommy’s Legacy had a real tussle up the last meadow with “Arnie” prevailing by a foot , the two Tries were back in third and fourth and the “General ” was taking in the scenery for Wednesday.

The top two in the puppy table clashed and honours went to Miterdale Shadow finishing fast with The “Sergeant” in third,which was backed on the downward slope together with “Becks” who finished only fifth both split by the consistent Black Legend and championship contender Crazy.

Now! If there was a trophy for patience it would have gone to the Mark’s with their hounds Summer Rose and Dancer. Willy and Craig persevered last year and after a consistent spell Summer Rose finally got her head in front at the expense of the late bred Miterdale Steele. She did win a Non Winners at Kirkstone last season and Buble was second,. I was informed on Tuesday night.

It was to cold in the last to take much notice but Overwater Jack got the better of Thorn Fire in the final strides.

The first joint venture with the Border association and although the HTA won four of the five trails it wasn’t plain sailing  nor was it without  more controversy as you can see from the results  two of the juniors beat the clock and confusion arose as to what action to take. The minimum time of 15 minutes is there for a reason and Sunday’s trail showed why , If the trail is run any faster than 15 minutes then something is amiss and is declared void then along comes “sods law” and the last trail was legitimate although only just. There were a couple of mitigating circumstances that pointed to a short first half but as they were out of sight therefore no action was taken.

The seniors and Endure had won them all at Oulton this season and another win looked “On the Cards ” as he came into the last field with a “nice” lead only to surrender victory in the last few yards to Arizona , who held on to a narrow win over Liz.

And similarly in the Senior Maidens Fireman Sam , running over the longer distance , found the last climb a “hill to far” and from being in front  , didn’t get a ticket, victory going to the Appleby hound Cracking Gold, ( Arsenal 2 United 0 ) from Blueboy and Border hound Eagle Priya.

The pup maidens and Restricted seem to have no problems and as I was occupied there is no report and similarly the last , although in this race the first three nearly beat the clock and Class McCara gave the Borders there only success.

Report: It is not nice to report that certain individuals, after the last trail, showed the bad side of trailing. When you slip your hounds ,That’s It! , you cannot control what they do and you have to accept their actions. The Area Committee is there to see fair play and in this instance they found there was no interference, but that isn’t enough for some and stand up shouting matches in the middle of the trail field will not be tolerated, neither will foul language, I took my daughter, grandchild and friend, who was seeing her first trail, to Corney and they were not impressed, not as much with the argument but what the argument was about,” It only turned around” said my daughter , granddad had one that used to growl if anything tried to pass it and it was still running at six .

The video of the finish will be shown after the enquiry into the incident is finished.

The trails, after a delay, got  under way and Marli , after driving every’inch’ scored by a couple of yards from the improving Persian Bay and Tommy’s Legacy not far behind in third.

The juniors, and after Wednesday’s close finish, the catchers were on their marks only to see Miterdale Shadow to win comfortably from Black Legend  who had plenty to spare over Nikita in third.

Again controversy in the next and the final trail concerning hounds ” cutting”. On open fell it is and always will be a problem, the answer , Well take Corney Fell last week, at a crucial stage of the trail the hounds were taken where the “back” hounds were unsighted from the leaders a simple yet proven solution to cutting.

Persian Sky won the maidens confirming her all-in form and Misha threw away her winning lead in the last and gave the trail to the train driver’s ,bookies wife , Clare with Cartier.

Report: The fifth trail meeting of the season at Oulton and Endure has won all of. the senior trails. Last night he won in a ” hack canter” finishing well clear of Arizona and Liz.

The cattle in the finishing field had a bearing on the pups as a number of pups were made to run wide. Del Boy ,slipped through a gap and won well from Crazy and Rio..

Cracking Gold and Wanted had the last trail to themselves.

Report: The last hound in the Also Ran’s was Cool Return and that describes the weather , cold , windy and not ‘ May’ ,more like October.

Marli has  hit form and recorded win number two with a few lengths to spare , over the ever present , General James, . Kenmore who was ‘up with the pace at half- way , dropped away and running on for third place was Tommy’s Legacy.

The pup trail and  a lot of registered pups are the same colour and it was intimated that at sometime during the season it might cause a camera problem. Well ! sorting out last night’s result was a nightmare for ‘rookie ‘ judge Allison Langhorn.

According to the camera three hounds crossed the line as one.

But in reality there was four and to add injury , the leading hounds carried on , passed their catchers’ making the ticket catchers job more difficult.

Sorted it out and it ended with a win for Miterdale Shadow and the winning distances – three short heads.

The open maidens and again the camera was in action , Lone Rebel was initially  judged first ,  then after consulting the camera the  decision was changed and the spoils went to Fireman Sam.

In 2014 Fireman Sam won 17 pup trails and in 2015 Lone Rebel won 12, beset by injury perhaps patience will be rewarded.

The final race the all-in , which once more is the talking point , and what was it designed for , to bring hounds back into training , it could end up with its own points competition ! Oh and Misha bt Thorn Fire.

The senior trail and only ten faced the starter and it was a first win of the season for Ivor and Wendy Martin with Marli, the first of three winners from the Westmorland Area , Marli the second favourite held on from the fast finishing Overwater Arnie who came from fifth to second place with the favourite Endure in third.

The senior maidens and the second Westmorland winner in the shape of Reg Smith’s Kendal hound Accolade , she finished strongly to beat course winner Another Bay with Blueboy in third.

Crazy confirmed her status as leader of the pack when she stormed home to win number six at the expense of Rio and Huntsman’s Major,. the favourite NIkita went AWOL and ended up finishing second in the puppy maiden trail causing slight confusion amongst the catchers. This trail was won by Artemis ,Nikita’s kennelmate, and provided Joe and Vanessa with Westmorland’s third winner, and just denying the Moore’s a double.

The largest field of the day was the restricted trail with 36 runners and was the fastest of the four short trails and was won in convincing style by the lightly raced Little Messy, Thorn Fire was second in front of last week’s non- winners winner Cotto.

At the time of writing Canny Girl was still missing.

And- who let Graham Reid’s ” Greyhound ” out of the traps and consequently ran across to the pup start , nearly giving him a 28 day ban as it wasn’t entered.!

Report: The first of the season for the ever popular Cold Fell and in the seniors it was a case of was it or wasn’t it as a light coloured hound was spotted returning to the start, was it the General ,it was reported as not been seen at halfway by non- other than his owner but! as it was – Miterdale Copper came back and James made an appointment with specsavers as the General strode up the finish to register his first senior victory, Blueboy belying his maiden status finished a good second and Explore finished fast to take third.

A field of 26 for the pups and a win for the unusually named Foxparke Golden Balls who passed Black Legend on the run in to record his first success.

Kerrymore ,a second year veteran is at the top of her game at the moment and she got the better of Hunter’s Dale and Westgate Autumn to register her second win this week.

And in the last a welcome change of fortune for Storth owner Les Black when Canny Mover was an easy winner from Carlisle’s Cartier with Accolade in third.

As one punter said , “what won”  Canny what?  “Mover” was the reply , bugger it I’ve backed “Canny Girl”. hard luck ! , next time just say Canny and then claim your winnings , whatever wins !

Report. A fine but cold night for the second trail on Corney Fell, where your mobile phone network tells you that you are connected to the Isle of Man and you might as well be there for what use it is.

Jonty’s hounds once more took the honours and even a fall at the last fence or it could be called the first fence could deter Crazy in the juniors. After the two Tries had won the first and Crazy the second it was veteran Kerrymore who took the maidens holding on from the fast finishing Summer Dancer, who had made the long trip from Carlisle,Fireman Sam had ,once more led them a ‘merry dance’ ,the first five finishing clear of the rest.

Copper and Shadow won easily but Princess was closely pursued by Cartier and  Oh! I forgot another homer this time Free Spirit in third.
