Report . The weather had a certain autumnal feel about it as the coats came out for the first time this “backend”. Gatesgarth at the bottom of Honister Pass played host to the trails and in the seniors Overwater Arnie scored his sixteenth victory of the season when he came from fourth to overhaul Jenny’s Delight, Huntsman’s Jenny and Ladybird. Once again the downhill path and the ground before the final jump put paid to many a chance.

Jenny’s Aura put the puppy championship to bed with  win number thirty one beating Kenmore by two lengths after dominating the race for most of the way ..

Kinniside Joe won the maidens comfortably from four Eskdale hounds and kennel mate “Bess “. There was one hound that had a bit of a chance but made a proper “tea party” of the finish.

Kerrymore rounded off a successful night with her fourth veteran  win of the season with the consistent Silver Spangle in Second.

The third trail in a week at Dearham and another senior winner. This time it was Endures turn and as Thursday night he came head to head with Bracelet but this time Bracelet made a hash of the last beck and subsequently gave Endure a five length lead which was being whittled away by the favourite but the line came in time for Endure who’s win ended a long sequence of seconds and thirds.

The pup trail and although Liz had it sewn up before crossing the beck she put in a spectacular leap to make certain of her 20th victory of the season. And the same six on Sunday as Thursday, just a slightly different order.

Westgate Belle, Cracking On and Razzle Dazzle had a rare old battle in the restricted , a length between each .

And once more in the veterans it was Artisan and Silver Spangle who had the race to themselves. The Kendal hound won readily, her thirteenth of the season at this level.

Report (  Third Attempt ) Against the backdrop of Kirk Fell, Lingmell, Great Gable , Wasdale show once more played host to people from all over the country , enjoying the unseasonal weather and the numerous attractions ,including four trails giving the spectators excellent views as the hounds negotiated the surrounding fells.

In the senior trail Overwater Bessy stole a march on the field on the approach to the finish and won readily from Thorn Dancer and Marlou , who has recovered well from her mishap earlier in the season.

The rest of the afternoon belonged to the Napiers as out of ten runners they had six tickets including the first three in the senior maidens and the first two in the puppy maidens. Foxparke Turbo set the ball rolling with a hard fought battle with kennel mate “So Be It “, winning by a head. “Rosie Lee” completed the double with a behind the judge victory over Kinniside Nell, who was disqualified for interference, promoting ” Homeward Dude” to second place .

The pup trail and Miterdale Rusty put his previous course experience to good use and held off the strong challenge of Sweet Harmony with Jenny’;s Aura leading in the pack, after making several mistakes, together with “the General”.

Report. What a difference a day makes, Thursdays trail was two seconds slower than Tuesday, and on Tuesday Bracelet came from behind Endure to get  second, last night she came from just behind the same hound but this time it was for first ticket.

In the pups Silver Dusk showed with a good lead and although Liz made ground she couldn’t peg back the Dearham pup. It was pointed out that five of the first six were from the Prancer- Silver Dollar litter and also if Wanted and Breeze get one more ticket apiece .’ Wishy will be able to afford a haircut. He went last week and inquired ” How much are haircuts and how much are shaves” the reply was £ 10 for haircuts and £2 for a shave, wishy replied ” Shave me head ”

In the last Ben 10 won by a length from the favourite Artisan with Kaiser Sosa in third.

Joining the spectators for the final trail were Four Belgians  who are working on the new ford car in association with Malcolm Wilson. They were intrigued by this sport and really enjoyed their brief visit, especially the one with my binoculars who couldn’t see a thing whilst the others watched them all the way down the finish. They were happy to give me a test drive but I declined on the principle of the steering wheel was missing and there were no pedals.

Bower House in Eskdale , a fine evening but a shade windy. In the seniors Overwater Arnie won again and firmly established himself at the top of the championship table, he won by ten yards from Galemire Grace with Songbird in fifth splitting the three Patterdale hounds for the minor tickets.

Jenny’s Aura won as she liked in the juniors and encouragingly in second place was Miterdale Copper, running again after an enforced rest, in third was kennel mate ‘Rusty’ , all the hounds finished well spread out.

The maidens and four hounds came onto the finish tightly bunched and after chopping and changing , Silverbelle emerged the winner, much to the surprise of one intrepid punter who, apparently can’t get the winner even after they have finished.

Report. A fine evening at Dearham on what is becoming an Indian Summer. Five hounds kept each other company for almost all the trail and on the finish the fastest of them was Sambuca who raced away for a fine win over championship challenger Bracelet, Endure and Persian Bay filled the minor placings.

The pup trail and after having gained a lead , after her rivals fluffed the fence, Liz strode home for a facile win. As the nights close in on the puppy championship it appears that Jenny’s Aura will take some catching but both General James and Liz will not be giving up the race.

The maiden trail and once more the purple hounds are up front in the shape of Yabbadabbadoo and So Be It. These two were split by Wanted and followed by Breeze.

Report. A special thanks to all the farmers and landowners for their permission, the trailers Pat , Roy and Garry, John for the gate, Bruce , Mike and Kimberly for scouting and Quad biking and the weather for staying kind.

The senior trail and after a long time in the wilderness Thorn Dancer finally came good, and it was no fluke as she strode away from her rivals on the homeward stretch and won handily from Bedazzled and Ladybird.

In the senior trail at the lane crossing the gate was shut as the hounds were to jump the wall about ten yards away , but no!, the hounds jumped the gate instead, so in the maidens we opened the gate , and what happened, all the maidens jumped the wall In front was Jazz Band , but he stopped to “piddle” on approaching the line and in trailing lingo ” Got nowt”. The winner was Capetown who didn’t relish the downhill finish and only won in the final strides from Hunter’s Dale.

Two hounds dominated the pup trail and it looked like it was the “Generals”  turn , as he led down the hill but in the final ten metres Jenny’s Aura came with a flourish and won by a length.

Only five non- winners ( there isn’t many more) and four if them kept company all the way round and it wasn’t until the final strides that we found a winner and that was Settle’s Yorkshire Lad trained by Nick Wilson, who’s brother was chief cook and bottle washer in the tea van.

Onto the restricted trail and it was a case of can you fool them into thinking “this is a new trail”, the answer “NO” and as two of them crossed the lane ignoring the bridge, jumped the wire landed in the beck which isn’t fast flowing ,but is deep enough for “Tom Daley” floundered about ” doggy paddle or breaststroke “and then proceeded up the old trail, turned around, came back, turned around set off again , I’ve no idea what they were but they were the cleanest and wettest hounds to finish.. Oh! and Dawn beat Menorah with Highness in third , these three were well clear of the rest.

The final trail , the veterans and the favourite Artisan ,almost completed the trail twice, Well! it was a nice day and a wonderful view from the top of Sour Howe., better than Hallgarth , any day!  The rest of them were led home by Kerrymore who just got the better of Simply Rascal and Silver Spangle who beat Tagget by a nose for third.

Now! As the first person on the field asked for the ladies. We attempted to erect some sort of  “Bog” . And the first person to use the so called ” Ladies Toilet” Jimmy Batty!.

Report . The final HTA event of the season at Gamblesby and the spectators were treated to five excellent trails and plaudits to Chris ( Kipper ) Henderson for organising the trails and thanks to all the farmers and landowners , the other two trailers , Jake and Ashley, the numerous scouts, the Area Committee and ‘Wishy’ the gateman.

The senior trail and as the hounds passed the trail field , five of the thirteen runners has broken clear, and had a good lead over the ‘pack’. Overwater Arnie drifted from 6/4 favourite to 5/1, which shows how far the second group was behind. But, it was a different story on the finish when at least eight appeared to-gether and in the lead ‘ Arnie’ ahead of Endure., who pressed ‘ Arnie all the way up the long finish , but once more had to settle for second place, Issabella made late ground to finish third

The senior maidens and Jazz Band drove the trail for the majority and was only headed in the latter stages by Foxparke So Be It nee So Be It, beaten half a length in the process. Also on the premises , most of them!

In the pup trail, Liz was made favourite over General James , but neither could cope with Just Mick, who held on to a slender lead and denied one half of the Reid brothers; the good -looking one , a victory.

. And after being unlucky last week ; Jazz Lyric made no mistakes in the puppy maidens  and romped home by five yards from ‘ Sparrow’ and ‘Rose’.

The final event, the open restricted, and a downpour just as the hounds were finishing made sure that most of today’s followers  went home wet! This trail provided Geoff and Barbara Jones with a much needed ‘fillip ‘ when Starlight held off the strong challenge of JLS to win by a head with Artisan , taking a break from the veterans , in third !.

Report. Ten faced the starter for the first of the ‘backend’ series of trails at Seaton and crossing Flimby brow  Izzabella and Try Again had established a good lead, some would say unassailable, but this is Seaton , but they were right as the two hounds kept their lead , although reduced, and Izzabella strode away to win readily. The ‘pack’ were led in by Try Time who just got over the line in front of the table leaders Bracelet and Overwater Arnie, who were having a valuable look around for the future.

The pup trail and after making a hash of the first road crossing, Liz and General James were towards the rear behind Silver Dusk.

Onto the finish and a number of hounds were in with a shout but the in form Liz notched up another win from the close up Swift Harmony and Just Mick.

Nine restricted hounds in the last race and veteran Artisan showed the young ones the ropes , she won easily from Darren Clarke’s Kaiser Sosa and Sugar Ray. Clarkie will be looking forward to next weeks Ryder cup , maybe?

Report.  Michael Renney , Bookmaker and supplier of solid fuels ,ie A Coalman.

At the December meetings of the area committees he was the one leaning on the bar arguing ” black’s white”  A “Crackerjack” of a man and sadly missed. Also Eric (sticks) Walker, a familiar face on the trail field, self ordered shouter out , often missing hounds out, and provider of toffees.

So in Michaels and Eric’s memory we gathered on Tallentire Hill for an afternoon of sport.

First up a small ,but select field for the seniors and victory to Overwater Arnie from Bracelet , close up together with Endure and Issabella.

The senior maidens and Meadow Josie and Capetown had an early lead from Cracking Gold , not far away and the rest with some leeway to make up. Onto the finish which includes a part of the Redmain trail, and here confusion arose , Meadow Josie headed up the Tallentire finish , Capetown kept a straight line and put herself out of contention, although she recovered to finish fourth.

What would happen next, would the pups guess ? answer,No! and jumping the last fence as though it was the Grand National, the Reid brothers Liz and Just Mick fought out the finish with Buble back in third .

We got the pups to come straight but the Pup maidens ,well  that was a different story as they ran straight , then turned , hit the last jump at the wrong angle, tried to get over the cattle grid and eventually headed up the finishing hill, perhaps it would have been the same result had they not have scaled, but I’ll stand by my assessment and say it would still have won.

On to the restricted and if any are going to guess then these will and they didn’t let the side down as the first five just kept going – Razzle Dazzle jumped the gate into the finishing field , the rest just stood , Razzle jumped back again, they had a ‘meeting’ , meanwhile another hound had come straight and was on the finish, not to be outdone Ben 10 came charging up the road , took a sharp right and went onto win -I suppose he deserved it after leading most of the way.

And the veterans , who? after coming down the Redmain trail more times than you’ve had “hot dinners” were bound to get wrong , but , No! never put a foot wrong and the winner ‘Artisan’ over Silver Spangle.

Thanks to all of you who bought raffle tickets and all of you who sold them.

Report. Better late although a bit sketchy.

Scouting for the first two trails and what with trying to keep the sheep back and holding on to my grandson, counting them was hard enough. Anyway I can say that it was a surprise to hear that Try Time didn’t ticket in the seniors as he crossed the last road with fifty yards lead, Bessy, Thorn Dancer were close up as was Lady and the Huntsmans ,as you can see from the result Try TIme was the only one missing.

In the maidens and once more a purple explosion and winning for the second time over the course was Yabadabbadoo , Westgate Rose was second and once more in third was So Be It. This time I was looking at back of the hounds as they crossed (no purple) but they had  Foxparke written all over them.

The pup trail looked to be a one dog race and so it proved as Jenny’s Aura came with a clear lead over Miterdale Rusty and popping up in fourth was Apollo ( one non winner trail left) splitting two more Foxparkes.

The open Restricted and the ‘red ‘un’ , Bewitched had a real tussle with Remember Me and Great Gable with the enigmatic Hunter’s Dale in fourth.

Everytime ‘ Jack’  Hunters is threatened with the ‘chop’ he decides to ‘go’. and a poignant second for Jeanette with Remember Me , for the time being the ‘ Me’ will be Les.

In the veterans and a return to the winners enclosure for Jacob , another red ‘un and sire of Bewitched, he won readily from Langdale Jack and made it a family day at the Show.

Report. A sunny evening at Fellside but a shade windy and getting colder.

On Calebreck common , about seven minutes running, Denzil aka Washington was in front  of ‘Gracie’ and lady Bethan, onto the finish and here ‘Arnie ‘ had struck the front and kept his advantage to the tape for win number 12, two behind Bracelet, Lady Bethan kept her place and two virtual newcomers to the senior ranks , Razzle Dazzle and Eden Rossi were fourth and fifth.

The puppy trail gave Jenny’s Aura another win on the road to the Junior Championship, Misha finished well to get second place with Swift Harmony in Third.

The maiden trail and a win for Stand By , who came from fourth on The downhill Section of the finish to overhaul Grange Music and Cracking Gold..

This was the final event on the Caldbeck/ Uldale fells and thanks to all the commoners for their permission to run and the landowners , lake Distict national park, for their co-operation.

Report. Once again Bracelet and Endure had a head to head battle for the senior trail and once more Bracelet got the better and went onto win by five yards with Sambuca a fast closing third.

In the pup trail a return to winning ways for Liz , she won nicely from Quiet Otter and Just Mick with the ticketing hounds close up . At the start the Chairman ,who was in charge of slipping his hound got a warning for ‘beating the gun’. He pleaded not guilty on the grounds of, the starter twitched and his arms were aching. Anyway it wasn’t me it was Kate Bush.

And on what was developing into a wet night the final trail saw another silent finish as Issabella passed Westgate Belle to record a win for the’ partnership ‘of Brown and Tinnion with veteran Artisan in third.

Open Restricted 1 Huntsman’s Hope 2 Starlight 3 Kaiser Sosa 4 Black Mist 5 Foxparke Chaos 5 Ran Time 20.39.

Report. A disappointing turnout , as one wag pointed out it’s Sunday trailing that’s killing Monday.

In the seniors Try Time upset the ‘jolly’ Songbird, who might have been unlucky as she damaged a leg in running, but take nothing away from the winner, a surprise runner after last week! He stuck to the task and put an even  bigger smile on Evie’s Face.

The ‘General’ looked nailed on in the pups but with ten yards to go Just Mick almost passed him , only to ease and settle for second.
