Report. It hasn’t been a bad week weather wise , has it ? NO ! not until  you arrive at Fellside and get blown away, cold and nearly wet, not a pleasant night and not for the lone bookie either as the three ‘jollies’ duly obliged.

The first one and keeping up her championship challenge , ‘Marli’ who drove all the way in front of Jazz Band , whom Bracelet passed on the uphill finish to gain second.

The pups and four hounds descended together when reaching the uphill section to the tape, Jenny’s Aura struck the right trod and held on in an exiting finush to win from Buble and Sweet Harmony.

The last race and an overdue success for the Jonese’s Starlight , after being beaten by a short head on Monday, she won clear cut tonight from Menorah and Razzle Dazzle.

Report. We have had all types of weather on Cold Fell this season and today was no exception, the sun shone., making it a pleasant day.

In the seniors Galemire Grace ,under the watchful eye of part owner Ian Hunter, finished far to strong for Persian Bay, who had led on to the finish, and notched up win number eight keeping her in touch with the championship leaders.

The senior maidens and Les Tyson’s Lady Anne completed her quota for the season with a clear cut victory over Layla and Kinniside Joe.

The pups and course specialist Buble run of wins came to an end when Sweet Harmony overhauled her in the final ten metres, Manna was third and these three were well clear.

The puppy maidens and they came down the fell in one long line, where Jazz Lyric came clear, to deny the Holmes family a double, when Stand By was placed second.

The biggest field of the day saw another course specialist Mr Ant win with the smallest of margins from Starlight with Cartier in Third.,

Grasmere Sports Sunday Aug 28th.

Seniors 1 Jenny’s Delight 2 Overwater Bessy 3 Huntsman’s Jewel 4 Ladybird 5 Jenny’s Choice 6 jenny’s Rose . 13 Ran Time 30 25.

Pups 1 General James 2 Yorkshire Lad 3 Manna 4 Spring Rose 5 Overwater Hally 6 Jenny’s Aura . 7 Ran Time 17.52.

Veterans 1 Da Look 2 Artisan 3 Jacob McClink 4 Tagget 5 Cinnabar 6 Tinkerbelle . 8 Ran Time 16.55.

Report. Grasmere Sports or Show held under the watchful eye of the ‘Lion and the Lamb’ or Helm Crag. The home of the Fell Derby , one of the prestigious events in the calendar, which most followers refuse to attend, why?  perhaps £6 is to expensive , well it should have been £7, some kind hearted person sponsored all to a £1 deduction.

And not without controversary as four hounds descended the fell together , across the main road and onto the sports field where Jenny’s Delight, held off the determined challenge of Overwater Bessy, winning by a head. The Judge, first and second catcher were unamimous in that the right  decision was given contrary to a photo taken from in front of the hounds.

The mornings trailing began with the pups and General James looked an all over certainty , but with a few yards to go dropped his nose allowing Yorkshire Lad to ‘go on’ but the ‘General ‘recovered and won by a head with Manna in third.

The Open Restricted and a minor shock as Remember Me , remember the International and the Dog Produce, put a miserable season behind him when holding off the challenge of Eden Rossi and Menorah. Well done Jeanette and Les, hound trailing stalwarts ,never complaining, well! only about each other, an example others should follow.

Then followed the ‘old timers’ who nearly went the wrong way at the start , you would have thought that they had never run here ,.– Da Look last years winner , once more showed his liking for Grasmere when beating Artisan and ‘Jacob’

Finally thanks to those who stopped behind to search for ‘Mickledore’.

Ps . We sometimes in this sport have to ‘face the music’ but I draw the line when you have to ‘face the book’ for trying to do the honest and right thing.

Report. Only 31 hounds for the fifth meeting at Bridekirk and Bracelet notched up win number ten to go joint leader of the senior championship and win number three over the course of which the times of the seniors has only varied by one minute over the season. Once more Endure had to settle for second place beaten by a couple of lengths with Persian Bay an encouraging third.

In the pups and a minor upset when Cool Enough notched his first open victory of the season when he pounced in the final strides to deny Liz of her fourteenth victory and in the impending gloom the cows on the finish played a vital role in the result when they impeded the favourite Issabella and although Try Time was also impeded he escaped trouble and won comfortably., Issabella finishing only fourth.

Report.  After a weekend of cancellations it was glad to be ‘back on the road again’ at Calebreck , where Marli kept up her serious challenge for the senior championship with a clear cut victory , after she had disputed the lead with Galemire Grace for the majority of the trail. Persian Sky finished third ,a marked improvement with ‘Denzil’ in fourth.

The pups and restricted trails went to the ‘jollies’ making three on the night ,the same three as last time at the same venue. Both winners won handily , Jenny’s Aura was chased home by Sweet Harmony ,these two were well clear and Canny Girl had plenty to spare over Menorah and Mr Ant.

Report. An excellent days trailing and if the times were correct only 6 seconds separated the last three trails.

A decent field lined up for the seniors and Bracelet was made favourite and she duly obliged with a hard fought win over recent maiden winner Westgate Belle. Bracelet had cut out the early work together with Endure with the remainder in close contention, Washington finished well to deprive Sambuca of third ticket with last seasons pup champ in fifth.

The junior trail and running on strongly up the long finish was Liz who won by ten yards from the fast finishing Buble, Just Mick and Quiet Otter ,  latter  two who were ‘in the mix were third and fourth

The open non – winners and any number of hounds were in the race as they came off the ‘moor’ and crossed the lonning. Onto the finish and a heap of hounds were vying for honours but at the line it was Jazz Lyric well clear of ‘Peggy Sue ‘ and the sailorman – Popeye.

In the final trail, Cracking On put distance between her  rivals to gain an easy success from Cartier and Starlight.

Another tale – continuing the saga of Buble- a bitch with a dog’s name and its pet name is Hilda.

What do think Les to the naming of Buble ,with the  kennel name Hilda, a bitch not a dog.

Les Reid replied almost apt.

.” With a name like ‘Leslie’ how can I respond “.

Also Ran Da Look-Cancellara – Cool Return – Ben 10 – Carrick – McCoy – Try Time – Blueboy – Blueband .

Report. Another warm evening at Ward Hall and  just 33 runners faced the starter. Once again it was the maidens that took center stage when Sambuca took the opener to register her first open  win of the season and non-winner Meadow Elsa took the last race, interspersed by course winner Silver Dusk..

Sambuca got the better of Bracelet in the final stride with joint favourite Arizona back in third in the seniors whilst ‘Dusk’ had an easy victory in the pups and ‘Elsa’ in the last , who ,in the words of her owner ,’ cannot finish or drive’  kept on well to overhaul Black Mist and Silver Spangle to win and in the process 4 maidens and a non- winner went a begging!.

Just a special thanks to Mr and Mrs Conway who came to the rescue of the chairman , who had a puncture on the road over Wrynose and without their help would have been there all night.

Report. A new venue thanks to the Farmer at Bowderdale,. Mr Paul Naylor and you are right in thinking ,is that any relation ? yes! Joss Naylor’s son.

On the slope of the hill, where it is an advantage to have one leg shorter than the other, overlooked by the towering crag of Yewbarrow , overlooking the dark waters of Wastwater.

The seniors, and as they dropped down the trod towards, what can only be described as an unusual finish, I’ve no idea what they were as I was on point duty at the last obstacle. Out of the beck ,up the banking, under the fence ,up the bracken bed and down the finish.  A blind finish of 50 yards and on its own was Huntsman’s Jewel, Ladybird well clear in second place.

In the pups Jenny’s Aura and Overwater Hally finished on their own , ‘Aura winning by ten yards , only seven finished as the remainder struck the senior trail and went for an evening stroll .

The open maidens came in a bunch preceded by a herdwick who led them down the fell and never looked like getting passed, there were plenty in with a shout as they appeared under the fence, and over the wall, but some hounds veered of left and some went right, on reflection perhaps if they hadn’t been exercised  in that direction earlier it might have been different as it was it was left to ‘Alfie’ and Out of the blue to  fight out the finish, the latter getting up on the line to win.

Finally Eight runners in the last and Free Spirit held on to beat Cherish by a yard or two.

In conclusion it would have been better with a more suitable finish but ‘beggars cannot be choosers’ And , anyway, the coffee cake was excellent and a small price to pay for a stiff neck ( looking up all night).

Also Ran Freebie – What Look – Tinkerbelle – Cancellara – Olivia – Jacob McClink – Da Look – Jimmy Choo.

Report. Another warm evening and it made hard work for the 59 hounds that took part.

The first two events saw the winning hounds lose their maiden tag , firstly Westgate Belle, who came clear on the long downhill finish from warm weather specialist Tommy’s Legacy and Canny Girl, and then  followed a win by the consistent Sweet Harmony, who also came clear from fellow maiden Popeye, the favourite Buble was well behind.

In the maidens the first three came well clear and last years winner ‘Cracking Mover ‘ repeated the dose with a win over Aspire and Eden Rocco.

The veterans and in the failing light ,once again there were three well clear Miss Ellie beating Tagget and Artisan.

Report. I suppose it would be quite difficult to give a report on the Wasdale Trails without mentioning the Low Place kennels in Miterdale, simply because they won all three, there you are ‘done and dusted’.  Next>

As you turn left at Santon and head up the road towards the head of Wasdale, after a few hundred yards you ’round a bend’ and in front of you is , in my eyes, one of the Lake Districts most stupendous views with Kirk Fell commanding the center, Lingmell and Great Gable to the right and Red Pike to the left and nestled next to the trail field St Olaf’s church.

First up the seniors and it’s a good job it was a fine night as the trails were advertised a quarter of an hour late and like the proverbial ‘bride’ the starting end trailer, was running late ,’ Arthur Temple scurried up the field , to the ribald shouts of ‘ where’ve ya bin’.

As the seniors came into view on the breast of Lingmell – There were four hounds clear including course winner Huntsman’s Hope and Free Spirit, who enjoys the ambience of Wasdale. These two hounds gained a nice lead over Ladybird and Thorn Dancer, who , incidentally, was making her first visit. Over the last wall and it was number one of a unique treble , Free Spirit,  who had a few yards over ‘Hope’ and held on for victory.

Only seven pups and with only three ‘ in the race’ reduced to two on the finish, it was a competent win for Miterdale Rusty over Manna. That made two up and one to go for Steph and Tony , could they make it three . ‘ Easy Peazy’ – Miterdale Prim came away in the last to beat the ‘Kinniside pair of Bess and Nell.

There you have it , A treble for the Steele family from Miterdale in Eskdale, just thought  i’d mention it.!

We are not quite finished- in the last trail it was noticed that a certain hound ,who’s ‘identity will remain a secret, ran across the fell like a ‘ scalded cat’. It made up a vast amount of ground and for me, it is the fastest  I’ve seen run over  rough terrain except perhaps for ‘ Joss Naylor’.

Now for something completely different:

Two trailers, who , last weekend, after walking a trail decided to partake of liquid refreshment on the way home. As they ‘put it’ ‘a couple of shandies’- Then the waft of cooking aroused their hunger pangs and completely oblivious to the fact of ‘home cooking’ tucked into pizza and chips. Then they went home to a well deserved meal- I leave the rest to your imagination. One thing though, one of them was having Pizza and Chips——– AGAIN!

By the way – no names but for the tale we will call them Tony and Ian.
