2025 Championship Races

Dearham Thurs June 16th

Seniors 1 Arizona 2 Bracelet 3 Washington 4 Santino.  4 Ran Time 34.01.

Pups      1 Silver Dusk 2 Telstar 3 Silver Dawn 4 Liz 5 Margaret Rose 6 Cool Enough. 21 Ran Time 17.30.

Open Restricted. 1  Silver Spangle 2 Sunset Ridge 3 Issabella 4 Remember Me 5 Carrick 6 Foxparke Artist. 13 Ran Time 17.19

Report. Although there were only four runners it was nevertheless an intriguing contest and all four were together for most of the race. onto the finish and Bracelet and Santino showed in front with Arizona in third. Knowing that the owner had a substantial wager on  his charge, Sadie started to shout with great gusto and Arizona scored his first win of the season and will not be a maiden next year.

The pups and would you credit it – Telstar made the same mistake as Tuesday and gifted the race to – not Dawn but Dusk- Silver Dusk , making a double for the Dearham kennel.and in the last Silver Spangle , following up from its veterans win on Tuesday won the restricted trail from Sunset Ridge , making it a clean sweep for Dearham .

A couple of tales from tonight – in the pup trail the message given to the scout was that there was 22 runners , when in fact there were only 21 , therefore there was one hound to cross , its ours said  Geoff and Ian, celebrating Englands win over Wales and consequently they prepared themselves to catch the hound ( with permission) as it was tailed off- they stood at the crossing like two cricketers in the slips – first slip and leg slip and – waited and waited- by this time ‘Bess ‘ had completed the trail and was standing bemused on the finish as there was no catchers, where were they , still standing on the road.  ‘Nuff said.

And if you are still a maiden then don’t win a restricted trail but nobody tells the hound not to win and worse still is if the owner is on holiday and somebody else is caring for the hound suddenly finds himself in this predicament, what do you do , tell it to stop, hope it tumbles, ring ‘scrunt’ and ask him for advice, well! Silver Spangle came to Tut’s rescue and Sunset Ridge lives to win another day.

Report.  One five minute shower on a day forecast to be wet-  so much for weather predictions!

A round dozen seniors for the first of Grasmere’s only two meets and an overdue win for ‘Arnie’ by ten yards from Meadow Josie, making a rare appearance on the ‘fell’ and surprising all especially the vice chair. ‘ second are you sure’ , from the owner.

The pup trail and they coped extremely well with what is a difficult trail , first time of asking, two pups established a clear lead but on the finish there were four in with a shout. And it was Jenny’s Aura that prevailed from Canny Mover and ‘Copper’, the first three are all simarlarly coloured , which can be confusing.

In the restricted , in the fading light, it was once again a ‘silent’ finish until the last few yards when a lone voice called in Menorah when realising it was going to win anyway after Eden Rossi had thrown away the lead, Littman was a close up third.

Report.

A fine night for the first of the Dearham trails and first blood went to Dawn, who led at the first road and the last road and on the finish where she was pressed by Westgate Belle who was in danger of losing her maiden status but Dawn finished the stronger and won by three lengths with Santino close up in third.

The pups and Telstar looked like notching up his first win only to be let down by his jumping missing the penultimate fence and gifting the trail to another maiden Silver Dawn with the third and fourth close up , these were clear of the rest.

Onto the maidens and Trooper Thorn and Cool Return finished well clear and in third Hoggy’s Skidaddle – you probable noticed that Graham caught the second that was because Lisa hadn’t got to get too  excited as she was ‘ imminent’.

In the veterans Artisan came in front , missed the jump, Spangle took over but the wily old Artisan knows where the line is and won by a length.

Report. A welcoming sight to all hound owners and the hounds as well – RAIN! And did some hounds benefit from the cooler and wetter conditions.

If you had Jenny in your name or were a ‘Huntsman’ you would have been in the prize money at Goosewell. Eight runners, seven tickets  first and third in the seniors, one two in the pups and first and third in the last.

I don’t think the seniors altered much from halfway, where Jenny led from’ hope’ with Debra in third. Huntsman’s Jenny, appreciating the rain, won comfortably from former kennelmate Huntsman’s Hope with Jewel in third.

The pup trail and after a early scale, Jenny’s Aura poached a good lead and won comfortably from kennelmate Huntsman’s Loyal. the placed hounds as recorded doesn’t play a true record. Miterdale Copper, Sweet Harmony,Canny Mover and Stand By all ran off on the finish and crossed the line behind the wall and were not judged.

The maiden trail and former champ Song Bird stormed up the final meadow to get the better of earlier leader Quiet Siskin, the first five being well clear of the rest led in by a rejuvenated ‘Jacob’.

Not another one , ‘yes’ the last race and ‘Jenny’s Rose making it a ‘Bland treble’  won easily from Jimmy Choo who held off a rather mature Jenny’s Rascal for second place.

Report. Credit where credit is due and the Cockermouth team under the guidance of Phil and Neil deserve it, on time, well signed in all a pleasant days trailing thanks to all who helped, gatekeeper, trailers, scouts, a speclal thanks to all the farmers and sponsors and those who attended, first estimate is a profit of £250+ on the day. Bridekirk had come in for some criticism as the chosen venue but six of the seven HTA areas produced a winner, so!!!

First trail of the afternoon, and only 12 HTA seniors plus Two from the BHTA.

Thorn Dancer was the favourite but there was plenty of support for Bracelet and Endure but coming to the bookies rescue was Tommy’s Legacy who ran on strongly from the two challengers, Bracelet and Endure with the other ticketing hounds close up.

The senior maidens and after finishing second last week at the venue and winning on Tuesday the fancied Lady Anne repelled the challenge of Westgate Belle and the fast finishing Sambuca to claim the spoils for the Ulverston area.

The main event of the afternoon , the Dog produce, produced an exiting finish when Eclipse looked all over a winner only to be collared in the final strides by Overwater Roger .’ Roger’ owned by the Irving family of Stockbridge farm nr Overwater , sired by Huntsman’s Hope out of Nellie Kim, and bred by the Irving family and winning for the seventh time this season taking him to joint top of the table ( for half an hour). Telstar was third after running low on the finish and the ‘General’ back in fourth. It was reported that Eclipse might have been a shade unlucky after apparently’ missing’ the last obstacle.

As reported ‘Roger’ was top of the table for a while , that is before his female rival ‘Liz’ took the open puppy trail, winning in fine style from the Dearham kennel mates Silver- Dawn and Dusk.

The restricted trail and the biggest field of the day so Dairy Lightning emulating his mother Dairy Diamond when holding off the persistent challenge of double seeking , Brian Graham’s Bassenthwaite kennel, with Dawn and Santino in third.

Finally the veterans and first year veteran , the Kendal hound Artisan held off Silver Spangle, another first year veteran with Settle based Tiagress finishing a respectable third. for Mick and his ‘Harem’.

A good day was had by all and even the loudspeaker worked!

Kendal 9th June

Seniors 1 Jenny’s Delight 2 Huntsman’s Jewel 3 Explore 4 Grange Music. 4 Ran. Time 31.47.

Pups Cancelled.

Open Maidens 1 Canny Girl 2 Mr Ant 3 Eden Rocco 4 Full House 5 Black- Eyed Boy 6 Mrs McGregor 11 Ran Time 17.47.

OR 1 Eden Rossi 2 Cracking On 3 Paloma Faith 4 Jenny’s Rascal 5 Kerrymore 6 Mr Ant. 6 Ran Time 18.39.

Report. Only four seniors but , nevertheless, an intriguing contest , and at half way they were in reverse order of finishing, on to the finish and Jenny’s Delight, who is becoming a second half runner, showed with 50 yards lead over kennel mate ‘Jewel’ , and held the advantage to the line.

The pup trail, none entered, none started and none finished.

The open maidens , which included two pups, was won comfortably by Canny Girl and Eden Rossi won the open restricted with a well rounded former champ in fourth ‘ Rascal’.

Although it was a quiet evening we did have our entertainment- again ‘Batty’ was involved, the radio in his car wouldn’t work, so the CD wouldn’t play. CD of who ? a bloke who played the piano , years ago. After a number of wild guesses , the answer? not the merry old soul but ‘Nat King Cole’. So, Jim is ready for the off, car in reverse ,foot on accelerator, handbrake off, car doesn’t move , not again thinks Jim,’ what now’- no problem – ‘why’! The daft bugger hadn’t turned the engine on!- Happy Days!

To have or not to have ; that is the question? – a short trail at short notice because of the weather, a shorter senior trail and a shorter puppy trail- some are all for it , some aren’t. The committee has full power to implement change if necessary ———- awaiting input from the members!

Kirkstone Pass and here it was a late decision to run the full trails and the times compared with 2015 . Sen 26.53- 26.50- 28.59 = 2016 – 28.43. Last night 30.15.So they were one minute and 16 seconds slower than the slowest time in 2015 and the pups in 2015 – 20.18 – 19.14- 20.07 and in 2016 20.24, last night  21.06 about a minute longer than standard. So you can draw your own conclusions!

The trails and Huntsman’s Jewel is on a crest of a wave she led every inch of the way and beat Jenny’s Delight by 50 yards with an unclipped Ladybird in third.

In the pups as they approached the road they had to negotiate a cow or two, now the cattle who were nearly on the trail stood still and took no notice but the hounds took evading action putting in a wide circle, a case of taking no chances ,on the other hand the maidens realising the beasts were no bother , took no notice and kept a true line.

Overwater Roger won his sixth trail of the season easily from an improving Sweet Harmony and in the maidens Lady Anne got the better of a tiring Canny Girl with the ticketing hounds close up .

Report.

Well! That is the first time I’ve been to trail meeting where the senior trail has had no entries and to confound matters there were no senior maidens either.

As somebody said I blame the Chairman- so to satisy him I did a rain dance ,standing still !

The pups and only three got round , these were well spread out and victory went to Overwater Hally. Eleven Pup maidens and they beat the clock by a mere 14 seconds , first place went to yours truly with Boston who got up on the line to beat Speed On by a length.

The All In  and ten minutes faster than the pup maidens was Sambuca who beat Persian Sky and the long time leader Dairy Lightning.

Report. Considering the conditions the hounds cooped well although the senior trail was longer than usual, here, Bracelet won easily from Jenny’s Delight, Hunters Dale got as far as the ‘pigs’ And declined the challenge.

Silver Dusk came from third to win ‘going away’ from Liz and Overwater Hally. The old saying comes to mind -‘win a maiden ,next run win an open trail’ .Or perhaps because the ‘gaffer ‘was in charge , Nicola was still at Lamplugh .

The puppy maidens and another ‘good race’ and first, second. fourth and fifth went to the Holmes family of Skelton, the three girls giving priority to the’ boys’ via Sultan.

The locals were having a field day when ‘Edens’ took first and second in the maidens and in the veterans and veteran trainer ‘ the undertaker’ scored with Simply Rascal, the favourite Da Look didn’t figure and a disconsolate owner went by humming a ‘moor’ version of the ‘ Hollies’ Just one look’

Report. If I said that the hounds finished In dribs and drabs, that some were still missing and most of the seniors were ‘picked up’ that would be an accurate report of the afternoons sport , you can’t help the weather, to hot ,to dry and lets face it todays hounds aren’t use to prolong hot and dry spells.

Only one senior, Discard, completed the seniors , almost ten minutes over the allotted time, the pups, only five completed in the allotted time and ‘sods law’ Quiet Otter lost her maiden tag by 14 seconds by finishing alone with the ‘General’  in similar fashion in second.

The maidens and to Add to the confusion five hounds came together three pups and two maidens, Trooper Thorn emerged the winner , a little consolation for Darren  who was still waiting for Endure , together with ‘Studdy’ standing in for holidaying Keith ( lying by the pool waiting for a call) Didn’t stay for the last .

Report’ Buttermere valley in mid summer, can’t think of anywhere more relaxing and startling. The trail field nestling under Fleetwith Pike, Haystacks, Raven Crag , Red Pike and High Style gives rise to spectacular views and with two tea vans what more could you ask for, a smashing time was had by all bar one unfortunate family who ‘ smashing was relevant’ . When you go trailing you don’t expect to be helped onto the trail field by the car following, nobody was hurt and ‘Rusty’ won to ease the ‘pain’.

In the seniors Huntsman’s Jewel recorded win number two when she beat Discard by Ten yards with a promising run by ladybird in third, she is improving and if she doesn’t run out of ‘ petrol’ could be one to watch.( see titbits)

The puppy trail and once again the majority of the field was in contention coming down the fell and onto the meadow,19 out of 26 to be precise, with Larty Carty throwing away a winning chance it was ‘Rusty’ who took up the mantel and beat ‘Roger’ with L C third.

The maidens and ‘Yogi’ came from second to deny Come Home Alfie by five yards and kennel mate Eshdale Matilda in third and in the last Huntsmans Jenny won handily from Jenny’s Rose and Menorah, these three were in command for most of the race and finished well clear.

Report. Back to Bridekirk for their traditional bank holiday meet and as you would expect the senior trail would be exactly the same time as Thursday’s trail, well you would be wrong, it was one second slower. Thorn Dancer , who finished eighth on Thursday , won in great style getting the better of Quiet linnet on the undulating finish, she had been prominent throughout  the trail. finishing third was Washington who was tailed off on Thursday followed by Try Again.

Times , can you trust them, well on Thursday  the non winners were 21,21,today  the pup maidens were  21.25 and the restricted trail on Thursday was 17.48 today it was  17.55, times compared but did the hounds?. Lady Ann tailed off on Thursday finished second to Discard in the senior maidens,, Discard , who missed most of last season ( no transport) and winner of four senior trails in 2014 and well supported in the market won for Terry ( no photos please) McVeigh.

The junior trail and unplaced on Thursday Liz revelled in the hot weather and after a ding-dong battle with Eclipse, also unplaced on Thursday, was a length winner , Margaret Rose was third and the favourite General James only fifth.

The final two trails went to the Dearham kennel of Joe Abrahams and Nicola McMaster with Silver Dusk and Santino both hounds were well backed . Dusk beating a bunched field and Santino got the better of Dairy Lighning in the final strides.’ lightning’ whoes owner Steve Riley won the best dressed award.

Just a point – the cars were all parked together , not split as they were on Thursday- making it more like one trail meeting instead of two, the right move !

A report with a different slant as most of the evening was spent ‘ scouting for hounds’.

It is a well know fact in trailing that on running a trail for the second time they will knock one or two minutes off the time. Well! the pups at Kendal knocked Ten minutes off Tuesdays trail. Jenny’s Aura, first pass the post on Tuesday was made odds on to win in regulation time and looked to have every chance but fluffed the gate and Overwater Roger took over and won by a length with Kenmore a close third.

With Huntsman’s Jewel winning the senior trail rather handily from Eden Rossi, it was the start of a profitable evening for the lone Bookie.

Explore won the restricted trail ,not a bad feat as according to one ,who shall remain nameless , was running third in the seniors. Second was Free Spirit, now in the Miterdale kennel, a good performance for a hound that hasn’t ‘ travelled  far!’

Making the journey from Cleator Moor proved no obstacle to ‘Trent’ aka Da Look when he beat ‘local ‘ Artisan , who probably has run more times ‘up above’. These two were well clear of the third , another long traveller Miss Ellie.

Just a note and an eye opener for the scout -I was scouting a one track , dead end lane and- would you credit it five vehicles went past and they all returned, even had to stop one whilst the hounds crossed.

Report. The first of the Cockermouth and Workington areas trails and a successful start to the season when over £500 was raised for the stroke unit at Cockermouth hospital.

The trails themselves attracted 123 runners , the Produce trails and International trails might have been a contributing factor, at a guess !

The senior trail and it was Jenny’s Choice and Quiet Linnet who exchanged blows in the early stages, apparently ‘ Choice’ put a circle in and on the finish it was down to Bracelet and Linnet and although going between the camera and the judge Bracelet had enough lead to be declared the winner from Quiet Linnet and Try Again in third .

The pups and three ‘Dogs’ out of the six, General James – Larty Carty – and Miterdale Copper showed promise for the Dog produce in a couple of weeks

Overwater Hally looked to be ‘nailed on’ but rather wavered and the ‘General finished strongly to take first place with Larty Carty in third

The non – winners and a number of hounds had a winning chance but it was the wigton hound Speed On that won in a bunched finish , getting the better of Foxparke Fandando and Kinniside Joe There were a few Produce entries in this event , none of which ticketed but there was 12 hounds within striking distance

Once again the All In trail proved popular with 46 runners and a re-run of Monday’s trails when Thorn Fire and Endure dominated , Meadow Josie ran an excellent race in third whilst catching the eye in fourth was local hound Sambuca See video for the finish which features the first 20 +  Houndtrailingassociation  com- press you tube icon- then videos
