Report.

The first of the Kendal committee’s trails and things didn’t go too well in the puppy trail when the nine runners missed the first turn,ran on, and hit the trail on the way back. Four returned to the start, one of them turned and went again. So! we had four runners + one and it took Jenny’s Aura all of 28 mins to complete the trail and ‘ Rusty’ liked the area so much he stopped out until eleven.

Only six runners in the senior trail and Langdale Ranger, handled by Dennis Peare ,won with consummate ease, could be more to come if he has overcome his injury problems.

The maidens and restricted hounds showed how quick the trail is when both trails were just over 16 minutes. The first and a head separated Capetown and Lady Anne , the result being confirmed by the judge on consulting the camera.

The camera wasn’t needed in the last as Huntsman’s Jenny upgraded from the maidens won with plenty in hand, Declan was second with Cracking On third.

Report:

Four hounds had poached a good lead by halfway in the seniors this was reduced to three on the finish , where Bracelet got the better of JLS to win by half a length with Persian Prince back in third.

Just six pups and Eclipse scored his first championship victory of the season, owned in partnership by Ian Hunter ( Galemire) that made a first and a second today for the genial vet ( the next bill might be cheaper)., he won readily from Liz and well back in third – Margaret Rose.

The Non winners and getting up on the line to deprive Sultan of first was favourite and kennel mate Sweet Harmony, Silver Dawn was a close third and uniquely Spring Rose was fourth  Why? unique – all begin with ‘S’.

In the last ,  after finishing a close third last week and winning on  Sunday ,the enigmatic Hunter’s Dale beat Mr Ant and Cracking Gold in a close finish.

Cracking On last was last  weeks winner and I didn’t file a report , so a special mention for Bill Mellon , who I have been reliable informed is going to name his next hound Cracking Jose.

Report. On a fine afternoon, as we looked over Ennerdale Lake to the fells of the Lake District, nobody could have envisaged we were looking- overwater.!

And Overwater it was – Arnie, Roger and Jack to be precise. Arnie was first up and He won by a few lengths after a tussle with  ‘ Gracie ‘  up the last meadow with Try Again in third and then it was Roger’s turn and he had a prolonged battle with both the ‘General and ‘Larty’ before leaping over the line to secure victory.

And finally the two year old ‘ Jack’ enjoying his  first season romped home in the last . After all the runners had run up the forestry path from the start , turned around , back down the path, a couple of tours of the starting field , and then they decided to go- all apart from ‘ Billy Bowe’ who in that short run took his pads off.

These three winners were interloped by ‘ Layla’ who won the maidens for John and David by a length from Bluebond and Rickman just behind. Apparently the leader fell over his ‘big feet; on the trod, according to sources he went down like ‘ Patterson’

On a lighter side somebody (nameless) listened intently to the future of the Overwater kennel finding out that there next run was going to be from the Isle Of Wight to Southampton!

Explore won his second trail this week and did it in similar fashion coming from ‘away off the pace’ he shot passed ‘Hope’ to register a happy birthday present to Donald , the remainder of the field were well strung out.

That part of the evening went to plan , the rest , well?  Phoenix , Tuesdays winner , could manage only sixth, Kaiser , tailed off on Tuesday won the restricted trail and the maidens ,nowt to say , except well done Lisa, a bit of a knockout blow!

Miterdale Copper , Kenmore and Yorkshire Lad had a great tussle in the pups – Copper won by the length of a truncheon.

Sugar Ray , well he was fifth on Tuesday ,first timer – he came in front and held off the challenge of Grange Music, who incidentally was a well back on Tuesday.

And in the final trail the Wilson Pair Flawless and Highness seemed to have things ‘ sewn up’ but couldn’t contend with the finishing speed of ‘Kaiser’ – another winner for ‘ Clarkie’ .

Report. Rusland valley in late spring, quiet, peaceful, hidden away, far from the maddening crowd ,that is until trailing starts and talking about hidden ask Emily, Jonty,or Graham , re ‘ the tour of Rusland valley”.

Huntsman’s Hope ,senior championship runner-up in 2014, after driving the trail for most of the way , looked to have things ‘sewn up’ when coming onto the finish with a good lead only to see it whittled away by Explore who won by half a length. Langdale Ranger was a promising third just in front of Jenny’s Choice.

There’s a saying in trailing that- once a hound gets a win no matter what grade ‘ the penny drops’ and Phoenix , winner on Sunday , arose from the ashes and simply’ flew’ to pass Larty Carty and ‘the General’ , to register her first championship victory for a smiling Joe ( he wont be smiling when he sees the scrabble board).

The maidens and a hollow victory for Huntsman’s Jenny as she came well clear of the opposition in an extremely fast time, was it right? well last year , Explore won in 15.50 and Kerrymore in 15.31 and Flawless two days later in 15.45.The applause at the end of the trail was for the popular ‘James Nicholas’ or Jimmy Nic who running for the first time in six weeks , just managed to cross the line in sixth place before flopping down ‘goosed’ .

The restricted trail attracted only 6 runners and the favourite Simply Rascal duly obliged.

Report.

A pleasant afternoon in the Eskdale Valley and just about warm enough for John Grisedale’s Legs. The senior trail was dominated by the first three in the betting and the top two in the Championship and prevailing was Thorn Dancer , who was winning for the fifth at this venue. Jazz Singer was second and ‘Gracie ‘third.

The junior trail and Jenny’s Aura went clear at the top of the junior championship with a facile victory over Overwater Roger who got the better of Kinniside Nell in the final yards for second place. Ronnie’s Rascal finished fifth the first ticket for ‘Matty’ since the days of the ‘ Pots;’

The maidens attracting the biggest field of the day went to non- winner Black- Eyed – Boy. He was one of seven hounds that had a chance and came through to beat Lady Anne and Huntsman’s Jenny.

The restricted trail and a double for the Joanna / Buzz kennel when Thorn Fire ran out an easy winner from Cartier and Littman.

Report. Back to Crag Farm in the Ennerdale valley, after a twelve month break whist a new pipeline was installed,  on a dry but windy evening only four seniors took on the fell trail and all four kept each other company for most of the journey.

Serenity found a better turn of foot on the finish and beat ‘ Arnie’ by a couple of lengths.

The video of the finish shows that it had been slightly altered from the usual – this had no effect on the seniors or the pups but in the maidens – Da Look , a veteran took   a boomerang route and put himself out of the race. Blueboy was first to right himself and held off Kinniside Joe to land a gamble.

The junior trail and despite running wide Larty Carty beat the ‘General’, these two were a distance clear of the third Overwater Roger.

The bookmaker called evens Kinniside in The pups- Ian Rudd ran up the lane to the finish and — false alarm it was ‘Larty’

Report. A week ago it was too wet , now it is too dry and the hounds feet are warming up. JLS removed a pad but this didn’t stop him winning by half of the last meadow, he was followed home by four of last season’s pups whilst the favourite Meadow Dixie was unplaced.

The pups and the notorious Lazonby finish lived up to it’s reputation when Margaret Rose was declared the winner. Jenny’s Aura and Liz seemed to be battling for honours but the ground slopes towards the judge and both hounds drifted whist Margaret Rose kept to the topside and duly won and this is an accurate description of the restricted trail. The very same situation but this time three hounds drifted- Razzle dazzle – Santino- and Hunter’s Dale whist ‘ Kaiser’ stayed high ( see video) After a long deliberation the result was declared- a sigh of relief from the Hunter’s Camp but ‘Kaiser’s Camp , well! He was a maiden!

Report. Another warm day ( shorts appeared anybody selling fake tan would have ‘ cleaned up ‘) . A few hounds in the seniors called it a day at half way, but this didn’t take the shine off Tommy’s victory ( minus Shirley) he battled on well to beat the consistent Galemire Grace.

The pups and once again the weather proved to be a ‘bugbear’ . They appeared on the long downhill finish strung out like Monday Mornings washing. Overwater Hally ,seemingly, had an unassailable lead , but as song goes ‘ don’t  dilly- dally ‘ on the way. He slowed, then stopped, then ran on, then looked for water and still led with only yards to go only to see the well -oiled  ‘ Rusty’ pass to claim his first win.

Song Bird , former puppy champion, and at the odds of 6/4, rewarded her followers with a convincing win in the maidens. To say she won by a mile would be accurate over the well- ironed Eshdale Matilda).

Report . Scouts eye view- Persian Bay and Jazz Singer battled out the senior trail at Oulton , Bay led over the last road but Jazz put on her usual fast finish to claim first , on the occasion of the first joint venture with the BHTA apart from the major trails.

Being a new venture it appears caught the officials out when it was discovered that the winner of the restricted trail , Tate, although qualified to run under BHTA rules wasn’t under HTA rules. You live and you learn  and in future this anomaly will be addressed. The last race was a particular success for the ‘ borders’ when they claimed four tickets.

By the way to keep with the farmers wishes the meeting was delayed by two hours. It was nice day , pies were up to scratch, what’s two hours in a lifetime.

The senior maidens and after Thursday ‘s excellent run in the seniors Washington was well fancied and justified his support- again the BHTA claimed four tickets with Water Spirit coming second and Mister Houdini third.

The puppy trail and this proved to be a disappointing affair with only two finishing, it can be pointed out that after the first two had crossed the Kirkbride road , the remainder ‘ downed tools’ in the adjoining meadow and were ‘ rounded up’ and repatriated.

The pup maidens , by name, should have had a similar problem, well! as you can see from the times, they were quicker and crossed the road and meadow with no problems. Report. Well! It was a better day than Wednesday and could you tell –  the distance between the  hounds and the fondness for water – the pup trailer reported that the hounds were slaking their thirst at halfway and we all know a belly full of cold water and half a trail to run doesn’t mix.

It seems that Thorn Dancer wasn’t thirsty, nor perhaps the more prominent hounds, as last seasons bitch produce winner won easily and goes joint top of the senior championship..

The pups wasn’t much different as Wednesdays winner Jenny’s Aura won comfortably from Foxparke (do the ) Fandango with three newcomers in the tickets .

Stopping for a drink some 100 yards from the finish didn’t hinder Explores win in the Maidens as the rest of the challengers stopped as well. First in- first out -the saying goes and that applied aptly to Explore who won rather easily in the end from Lady Ann and Huntsman’s Jenny.

In the restricted trail and Dairy Lightning ,now under the guidance of Steve Riley, responded well to the whistle and call of the Steele family , shouting for the second and bounded clear to beat Free Spirit.
