Report. The weather forecast was ‘ getting warmer ‘ well all I can say is it didn’t mean Corney Fell . The wind blew and the brass monkey went into hiding.

In the seniors it was Jenny’s Delight causing a bit of a surprise when she got the betterof the Thorn’s – Fire and Dancer by a length to register her first senior success , Galemire Grace prominent throughout finished fourth.

The junior trail and bang -in -form Jenny’ s Aura topped the junior table when she beat Misha by a length , Misha had led down the fell and was only caught in the final strides, the General was back in third.

Capetown was well fancied for the open maidens and ,perhaps relishing the shorter distance , justified her support with a comfortable victory over Huntsman’s Jenny and Eshdale Matilda.

And onto the last in ‘Baltic conditions’- another Huntsmans , this one is from the Garrity  kennel of Ambleside, finished well clear of his field which was headed by Paloma Faith and Quiet Linnet.

Report. The first trails of 2016 at the popular venue of Cold Fell and the first test for this seasons  pups over a neutral venue and coming through with shining colours was Miterdale Copper,who up to date had won two trails on home ground,but today coming from second place He overhauled  Overwater Hally to win going away and could have a bright future, finishing third and fourth were two other previous winners Larty Carty and Margaret Rose.

It may be worth pointing out that visiting the venue were two local officers of the law (coppers) and they weren’t sure where Miterdale was and are not allowed to bet on duty and had to pay for a cup of tea. Community policing and all that jazz.

Which leads to the Seniors where Jazz Singer went to the top of the senior championship with her fourth win after coming from behind to get the better of Try Again , who had been in charge for most of the trail , He was run out of second place by Galemire Grace on the line with Persian Bay in fourth , holding the flag for last seasons juniors.

In the open maidens another jazz ,this time band, led the 53 runners a merry dance through the adjacent fell only Persian Sun could keep pace with the rest of the field 100 yards adrift. Coming down the finish they had bunched up and in the final 100 yards Willow Bay took the lead and won nicely from Jazz Band and Lady Ann.

In the final event and ‘fully clothed’ ( unclipped) Cartier justified his support in the market when he beat Huntsman’s Hope and an interesting newcomer , last seasons pup who never ran, Overwater Jack.

137 runners at the meeting or was there 136 , ‘That is the question’ is there an answer?

And the ignorant driver who nearly ran ‘Tucker over’ and made indecent gestures towards me . Watch out there was a Miterdale Copper about.

Report. I’ve put the date before the day in the heading because it’s like the weather ‘, topsy -turvy’ . Where else can you survey the fells in the distance covered in snow , it is only six weeks to the longest day! and – a weather warning for tonight and Kirkstone is shut.

The hounds had to run to keep warm and Colin hasn’t started to wear shorts.

Endure, aptly named, showed on the ‘beckside’ with a comfortable lead and Persian Prince equally as far in front of the third. ‘Bob’ kept up his lead and put a smile on ‘Lynchs’ face,he hasn’t been o’er well tha knows!.

In the juniors Liz and the ‘General’ battled it out up the ‘beckside’ and over the tape it was the ‘female’ who got the better by a length.

Only eleven in the last and a welcome success for Bill alias ‘Scrunt’ with Sunset Ridge over Aspire and Bluebond.

We look forward to Kirkstone on Monday – In between trails we have organized a sledging competition and a ‘who built the best snowman’

Report.. Well to put it mildly it wasn’t,- mild! that is ! The ten seniors were not far into the race when it started to hail then it faired up and the birds started to sing, In fact Denis Reay heard the cuckoo and anybody seeing us standing on a hill end must have thought we were cuckoo!

The senior trail and even money favourite Jazz Singer notched up win number three when she led across the last road and kept Try Again at bay to win by a length, Meadow Dixie was third.

Margaret Rose won the pups just in front of General James , who led for most of the trail, last weeks winner Liz was in third.

Unfortunately there was no video coverage of the seniors because it was too cold and the pups because we were too slow but we have coverage of the last trail crossing the last road. It seems that Jazz Band has an unassailable lead but he is prone to do the ‘ unusual’ and after criss- crossing the finish still held on to beat Sunset Ridge.

We roll on to the weekend and just looked at the weather forecast for next Monday. 10 degrees that ‘s quite hot isn’t it?

Report. The first trail meeting of 2016 at Helton and 126 hounds + 1 took part.

The one being retired hound Cracking Thorpe enjoying life in Rawtenstall and the Lancashire fells . He pulled hard on his harness and escaped in the direction of the senior maiden start. Thankfully he found his way home unlike two hounds which at the time of writing were still missing.

The seniors and a win for Marli , her third of the season, at the expense of in form Jazz Singer, who led onto the finish. Here out of view from the field the trod up the finish splits into two with a another pathway in between. Marli took one Jazz the other and Endure took the middle. Then they merge into one, first into this wins and it was Marli.

The senior maidens didn’t have that problem as Canny Girl was well clear beating Willow Bay by 100 metres.

The juniors and once more they came in a bunch and Larty Carty ( named after a trailer of the past) scored for the first time denying a Black double by holding off Canny Mover and Margaret Rose.

The non winners – and a welcome success for Ray and Glenis with Mystery Girl. I am not sure which hound led across the road but it was slightly off putting to be hiding behind the grit bin and seeing ‘Wyatt Earp ‘ heading in your direction. all guns blazing!’

That left the all-in and a field that included last seasons senior Champion and runner up and course specialist Two Tone who ran the trail a minute and a half faster than the other short trails.

Deja- Vu at Low Place when once again Thorn Dancer showed a clean pair of heels to her rivals winning by a 100 yards from Daisy Dream and in the pups Overwater Roger came from second place, as he did on Wednesday, to win his third race of the season.

Explore turned the tables on Yogi in the maidens, in no uncertain manner , by a considerable margin and in the last kennelmates Littman and Dairy Lightning were 1-2 for Steve Riley in a remarkably quiet finish,.

Is there a name for the Oulton wind? it is nice and warm everywhere else , get out of the car on the first road crossing and the first words spoken are ‘ you’ll need your coat on!’.

The senior trail and winning for the second time was second favourite Jazz Singer, she overhauled Try Again up the Oulton Hill to take the flag in more ways than one, these two closely followed by Persian Bay and Endure . These four were clear coming out of the wood and kept their advantage to the tape.

In the juniors the aptly named Liz got the better of General James and Larty Carty in a close finish. Aptly named because of the Queens’ 90th birthday, Liz was winning for the second time this season and goes to the top of the table.

Thorn Fire was an easy winner of the maidens ,Jazz Band and Sunset Ridge second and third.

The prize money and paraphernalia were presented by Tim Backshall from Border’ crack and deekabout’.

Report. The first of the Lazonby Trails for 2016 and all went well, no hounds missing, the pigs behaved, Clare showed John how to make a book, Steve sold out, and the promoter won the opening event.

And the opening event provided a comfortable win for Meadow Dixie after Persian Prince had run of a true line on the finish ( a habit he has at this venue)The first four in the seniors poached an early lead and they finished well clear of the rest headed by Arizona (£3 towards cost)

The pups , and eighteen of them were within stricking distance when coming into view at half way, onto the finish and here the favourite General James showed in front of Queen and the one who finished eighth which swerved to the fence and lost ground.

Queen , who celebrates her 90th on Thursday and will be at Oulton, the hound not her majesty, finished well to deny the ‘General’ and win by a length with Jazz Lyric in third and fifteen others not far behind.

The All-In and with a following wind it was Chinook in a close finish with an Eden,  Mr McGregor’s Wife, and the other half of ‘Ant’.

Marli and Daisy Dream were made favourites after Wednesday’s results but having finished eighth  on Wednesday , her winter coat removed, last years bitch produce winner , Thorn Dancer showed in front and came away for an easy win from Marli and Thursday’s winner Jazz Singer.

The Senior maidens and a phone call to grandmother , after the trail , from Sophie told the tale of a victory for non- winner Miterdale Force, who was up to her old tricks of ‘not finishing’ but this time with the help of the last drop she had enough momentum to take her over the tape, only then did she ‘ charge off’ in the direction of home and then return over the tape again . Jazz Band held on for second with former puppy champion Songbird in third.

After Wednesday’s 1-2 the Miterdale’s were expected to emulate this but although ‘Copper’ won , Overwater Roger split them, These three and fourth and fifth were well clear of the remainder .

The restricted trail and victory went to Shameless , who won Wednesday nights void trail. the five year old came from seventh to win easily from another Miterdale , this time ‘Princess’ in front of Free Spirit ( Cliff was watching from the disabled car park)

The first veterans of the season and this went to first year veteran Pip’s Lad, in front of Black Eyed Pea and Artisan ,also first year veterans. The time of the last two trails were nearly identical and compared favourably with Wednesday night’s times.

The trails were well supported and gate money exceeded expectations, the only thing was that Jimmy Batty didn’t know that the trails were on last Wednesday and made a complaint about the missing fixture from the fixture sheet ( my fault).Having said he would have had a substantial bet on the winner , I had a quick collection on his behalf and got precisely nowt.

By the way it is nice to get praise when praise is due and last Sunday at Oulton things were rather hectic on the road crossing and in particular one hound decided to walk up the main road followed by a ‘young ‘ lady who got the hound off the road and down the farm lane. This was witnessed by one of our regulars and he remarked that he thought my ‘daughter had done a ‘good’ job.

The daughter in question was Caroline my 57 year old partner.

Report : From the view of a scout- Firstly it was a big improvement from Sunday especially concerning the juniors , who apparently on Sunday practically went round the  trail twice. They made no errors on the first section and apart from the odd one successfully navigated the other road crossings.

The senior trail was once a\gain dominated by Endure and it was only  in the dying strides that Jazz Singer got up to win by the narrowest of margins. There was also an excellent performance by Persian Prince in third place.

General James , a pre season fancy for the championship, held on for victory over Liz . His namesake, once more back in the fray, shouting him home.

It was quite a sight watching 46 hounds charging over the first road crossing and we managed to count them , Studdy got 45 , Ed got 44, Wiggy got 41 and I got double vision. It was a Cracking Race , just ask Bill Mellon.

Further to Sundays trails a lady waiting at the road crossing was sworn at by somebody in a car , she made a complaint of which we apologised and would deal with it. The moral is treat people with respect even if she did blow her horn.

Report: Instead of a parrot fashion report , a different slant, concerning the final event . It was unfortunate that the hounds struck the finishing end and consequently some hounds ran the full senior trail in reverse although this was not a long trail it was significant in , that the trail had been laid at four ‘o clock and now it was after eight , and the hounds preferred this to the freshly laid puppy trail. It was only last week when it was reported as ‘ the hounds can’t hunt the mixture’ what are you going to do!  Nowt!  And for those who don’t know the hounds the first three to finish were two five year olds and a six year old.
