The Pup show overall winner was a dog pup bred Kyza – Rose Report  A typical September afternoon in the vale of Kentmere and it is fast becoming a ‘Thorny Issue’.

In the seniors and as they approached the last road Where’s wallie had a commanding lead but in the final meadow , ‘Ranger’ had made up the ground but was always being held until five metes from the line Where Wallie took ‘Ranger’s ground and was subsequently disqualified from second place ,having been passed in the ‘dying ‘ strides promoting Canny to second place.

The second trail and a one off event ,a restricted trail on the senior drag This event only attracted 7 runners and the spoils went to Bedazzled from the favourite Tommy’s Legacy.

In the pup trail Marlou had a comfortable lead but ,once again, it was all change on the run in as ‘local’ Thorn Dancer took up the running and came away to win easily from the unlucky Marlou.

There was a bunched finish for the Maidens and leading the pack were Persian Prince   Fullhouse and Eden Rocco and the ‘winner is ‘ the one in the middle’; that’s Ian and Ann Bell with yet another Persian, by a shorthead.

That left one event and after winning one trail and the odd raffle prize it had to be Colleen for a treble, she beat Thorn Girl by ten yards,

I met an English woman ‘come’ Aussie who originally hailed from Crosthwaite and told me ‘ there was more hounds in my day’ and ‘When was that ? I inquired .

When Whitbarrow Lad was Champion — that was in 1954 only  61 years ago.

Report. It’s quite a journey to Seaton from home , only to meet two Americans from where! Windermere via San Francisco. One guess what they backed !

In the senior trail,on a wet night, with the wind in your hair and the sun in your eyes, Prudence  pounced  on the finish from a group of nine hounds and soon put the trail to bed, beating kennel mates ‘Spangle’and Barton.

The pup trail ,and although it was Arizona’s own ‘midden’,  three championship contenders made an appearance. And Persian Bay went to the top of the Championship table with a three length victory over Try Time ,’Kracka’ was a close fourth and Daisy Dream ,reportedly ‘out of the race’ finished ‘just out’ and Arizona was the proverbial ‘mile behind’.

In the non- winners and here tasting success was London based Irish cast off Darren Clark with Kaiser Sosa trained by Ian Fleet at Camerton, second and well clear of the others was Silver Lining.

Foxparke Mystery struggled round and gained her first ticket of the season ( drinks on Raymond)

Report: A nice, sunny and pleasant day at Loweswater for the Michael Renney memorial trails . It’s a pity it had to clash with Coniston.

Six trails and perhaps one of the most unusual finishes I’ve seen and certainly, in hindsight, one of the funniest. I’m referring to the Pup trail, if the trailer had laid the trail where the hounds went he have been sacked. To appreciate what happened watch the video  on www.houndtrailingassociation.com and open you tube icon and then open videos..

To put it into words – Delta Dawn and Silver Charm were the leaders of the gang- follow me I’m the pied piper. They went left ,then they turned right, past the gate, then turned left through the gap then—– watch the video! In the end Delta held on from Bewitched ( red one on the right) ‘Charm’ was third.

Then we had what can be described as’ chase me ,chase me as the hounds went behind the owners. Darren caught the winner after dancing from side to side , lost his lead and carried the winner to the Judge . ‘Priceless!!!!.

Back to reality and Huntsman’s Jewel was a surprise 12/1 winner of the Seniors . She was caught by ‘substitute’ Les Reid 50 yards in front of brother Graham’s Tan Ted with Jazz Singer in third.

The senior maidens and it was now apparent that hitting the trod in the bracken was crucial and then hitting the last gap head on . The latter put paid to ‘ Movers’ chances and the spoils went to Titanium in a close finish with My Way and Dark Mist.

The pup maidens and to add to the woes of Jazz Band, his collar parted from his neck ( faulty catch) and he went on his own and finished thus . Stroll On led the rest and won from Persian Prince and the favourite Bluebond.

The restricted trail and once more the downhill section of the finish was crucial and in the end Keystone won, denying the Holmes kennel a rare double , when Sundance was second just in front of a packing field of which anyone could have won ; with a ‘bit of luck’

And in Michael’s memory it was a ‘Crackerjack’ day.

Report. A great place for trailing as long as it stays fine and we got away with it by a couple of minutes.  You see plenty and sometimes too much , it must be a profitable place for bookies as five turned up. That said in went four favourites.

First to strike was ‘Rascal’ who went through the fell at halfway with a handy lead but as they ‘dropped’ before the uphill climb to the line, Langdale Ranger had taken the lead but when they came back into view , Rascal  Quiet Linnet and Night Vision were clear and despite hanging right ‘Rascal held on .

The junior trail and it was ‘chop and change’ as they negotiated  the ‘drop’ but into view and the favourite Lone Rebel had too much ‘toe for  Huntsman’s Kraka and Persian Gold winning by ten lengths.

And so it goes on as the favourite Blueboy got the better of Yabbadabbadoo, after a tussle , and won by a length with another Foxparke close up third.

Da Look might have been favourite in the last but judging by the encouragement  given to Colleen  she wasn’t without her supporters. She won by five lengths and Thorn Girl and Tiagress  had their own battle for third and fourth.

Report> We’ll start with the last race and a welcome win for Dearham stalwart Billy  Patterson aka ‘scrunt’ when Sunset Ridge stormed up the westward finish to beat  Cracking Gold, who also produced a solid performance,  and getting his first ticket on only his second time round  was Hunter’s Dale once more ‘patience and perseverance.’!

Back to the seniors and it is not often that Prudence gets passed on the finish but last night Another Bay got the upperhand of the reigning champ and put daylight between them and third hound Canny Girl.

In the juniors and Persian Sky ‘threw her cap into the ring’ regarding the junior championship with her tenth win.

She beat her sister Persian Bay by three lengths with the ticketing hounds close behind .

I hope you will join with me in wishing our Chairman a happy birthday on Friday.

Report:  Over Birker Moor once more into Eskdale or Eshdale if your local or called Matilda.

The senior trail ,and it looked on paper to be another Patterdale win but Neil and Joe teemed up to get Night Vision home . He had a challenger in ‘Jewel’ and these two were  the proverbial ‘mile’ in front of the next three  headed by Try Again.

The pups and once more ‘Daisy’ dominated the proceedings with a ‘bloodless’ victory over Thorn Dancer who in turn was clear of the third.

The non-winners went to the favourite Bluebond, who won handily from Kinniside with once more Miterdale Force’s antics costing her dearly.

And in the gloom once more a ‘silent finish’ but, to be fair to Maurice he couldn’t see them until they were practically on the line and that was too late for Tommy’ who had to settle for second place behind Liz and Tom’s Great Gable, Free Spirit was third and these were clear.

Back to the non-winners and late bred ‘Billy Whizz’ for the  ‘wha housers’ claimed his first ticket of the season – perseverance and patience will be rewarded.

Report:  Another Autumnal  September day for the trails at Helton and another report as seen from the last  and only road.

The view up the finish as seen from the road shows that one trod becomes three or four trods then they merge back into one showing that hounds try to pass each other but eventually have to settle for the main route.

Having said that ! Persian Prince found a way past Jazz Band in the pup maidens. He came into view with what looked like an unbeatable lead but capitulated on the uphill section, although rallying in the final strides he had to settle for second, that completed a ‘Persian ‘ double as earlier Persian Sky had beaten Bracelet . She was always in command and the only difference from the road to the finish was Paloma Faith edging out Venus for third place.

Endure hasn’t been in the winners enclosure since the 13th of May  but he won today’s senior trail impressively and by a wide margin , ‘Wallie’, showed his liking for the venue with a commendable second with Marli and the improving ‘Canny’ close behind.

The senior maidens and here Layla completed her quota for the season when she beat Cracking Mover and Sparrowmire Lily  . Dave and John were a tad disappointed, she was being aimed at the October trails, Ah well somebody’s loss will be somebody’s gain.

The final event of the afternoon was the restricted event which are fast becoming known as ‘ the silent finish’.

Silent or not Two Tone makes his own noise, and together with Carrick and Cartier   dominated,  winning by a ‘distance from points leader Mrs McGregor in fourth place.

Report. Nothing about  how far they won by but what happened outside, only, because that is where the afternoon was spent.

The seniors and conclusions drawn  was that the third , fourth and fifth hound would have been a lot closer if they hadn’t ‘missed’ the gate, at the last road , first one way then the other, just enough to count ,perhaps/ other than that not taking away from Jenny who had led practically all the way.

The senior maidens and first go to work the roadside wall at the first road, they managed to ‘drush ‘it- combination of weight perhaps? They ran wide in the field prior to crossing the last road and, on crossing the road ,which gives the hounds three options, they took all three -the hen run- the wrong gate and the right gate.

Now having explained the three options -along come the pups -Marlou on her own then ‘Daisy’ and ‘Jenny’s  who found route number four, at first  Hard Knott was favourite then a trip around somebody’s field then over the wall – by this time the rest had ‘flown’.

The last two trails went to order both winners led across the last road.

Just a scouting tale  Two young ladies in a convertible stopped at the red flag ,then started to edge forward- consequently I moved forward , waving the flag and mouthing ‘stop there’ -Again they edged forward – ‘Please I said the hounds are crossing  can you stop, ‘ Sorry ‘she said’ we’ re trying to ask you where Eskdale camping site is ‘Then the bloody wall fell down. Who will put it back – Well I left a message-‘ quite a number of old coins were lodged in the wall.’  Volunteers quick march!

Report : A fine night ,a typical September evening, competitive trails although a bit on the short side.

The senior trail and as they turned towards the finishing fields were we in for a surprise as Canny Girl was ‘driving’. But ‘Arnie’ and Tommy took over with Prudence stalking them. As they reached the bottom of the first meadow it was head to head -Tommy and Prudence and these two battled it out to the line where ‘ladies first’ by a head, Arnie was third and a canny run in fourth.

The puppy trail and a high class field where the placings were determined by how you negotiated the turn into the final two meadows. The juniors split into two groups, ones that were right turned left and the ones that were wrong went straight. Santino gave Persian Bay a race  and was closing the gap but ‘Bay’ held on for her fifteenth win.

The restricted trail was dominated by Two Tone and Barton, the former gaining the upper hand in the final few yards to win by half a length.

Now, the biggest smile of the night and a medal for perseverance Denis Reay — Hunters got round.

Report: A beautiful evening in Kentmere, that is if you’re not a hound. . You couldn’t help but sympathise with Pat and Jane when, with the maidens at his mercy, Jazz Band decided it was time for a drink in the adjacent beck. What’s more he was racing for the Ernie Smith memorial trophy sponsored by Pat and Jane and holds special memories of the genial Ernie.  Jazz Band was at least the full length of the finish in front but no amount of encouragement could move him and Howgill Benella took full advantage to notch her first win of the season for Ian and Ann Bell.

Back to the seniors and once again dominated by the two Jenny’s and coincidently and I can verify this as ‘gospel’ they finished first and second on the 24th August in a time of 28.20 and that is exactly last nights time. And stepping up a gear was Where’s Wallie in third.

It was an evening of deja-vu as the first two juniors were as of the last meeting ,. Thorn Dancer finished far too strong for Marlou with Bewitched in third making it a 1-2-3 for three sisters.

In the veterans and ‘Trent’s’ winning streak came to an end when He could only manage fourth behind Tiagress and Thorn Girl, these two were separated by a couple of lengths with Cinnabar in  third.

Report  ; A little bit sketchy due to ‘being on call’

We’ll start with the maidens and as you can see the result was nearly identical to the last trail at Lorton only Foxparke Turbo is different and if you recall  it should have won that trail. The Napiers again having five of the ticketing hounds.

In the pup trail the hounds when joining the senior trail ,basically they turned right instead of left, therefore in trailing terms , with the help of some stock,   struck it a*** ways about ,that is all bar one who having’ missed the wall ‘ and became detached from the rest didn’t put a foot wrong’ and duly won the trail in a ‘hack canter’ well done Artist. That is when the ;charge of the scouts took place as now unguarded roads would have to be manned. In the end all eight hounds were caught without any mishaps.

The puppy maidens negotiated the join better than their counterparts although five hounds were undecided which way to go. In the end it was ‘castaway’ Chaos’ again from the Napier stable that ‘flew’ down the final meadow to win from Silver Lining and Bluebond.

Back to the seniors and Quiet Linnet  dropped down the fell in pole position with Tommy’s Legacy and ‘Arnie’ in second and third with Sambuca and Night  Vision close up , these five were well clear.. I believe Sambuca stopped at the last beck and ‘Arnie’ won by a short head

Report: A fine day for the  trails at Lowick Show ( three fields away) and versatile Tan Ted and his brother Endure had a battle royal up the slight incline to the tape ,Tan Ted won by a length with previous winner Lady Bethan in third and champion elect Prudence in fourth.

A disappointment in the pup trail when both Daisy Dream   and Paloma Faith returned to the start, they both came up the finish and trail had been called but had been spotted on the starting end. The door was now open for Huntsman’s Kraka and she duly obliged albeit only by a head from Santino with Lone Rebel finishing third passing the tired Dairy Thunder who had led onto the finish .

The open maidens and two hounds dominated the finish , Casanova and Jazz Band , the former proved the stronger and tiring rapidly Jazz Band held on for second place over the evergreen ‘What Look’ and talking of evergreen ,Da Look seems to be getting more sprightly in his old age as he notched up another veteran , at the expense of Settle homed Tiagress..By the way that’s nine vets  on the trot for Da Look!

Report. A typical September evening  weather  wise  and Wendy didn’t need any boxing gloves . Arnie 7/4 came in front on the long downhill stretch and he didn’t falter when meeting the uphill section to the finish. He was chased home by his sister Marli and in third the reluctant ‘Little Messy ‘.

The pups and Persian Bay’s championship challenge was back on song when she beat Bracelet by ten meters ,Persian Sky another title challenger was pipped for third place by Paloma Faith.

And in the last Littman led down the fell but fell back on the uphill finish ,where Carrick beat Mrs Mac  by five meters and Two Tone in third.
