Report. Eclipse lived up to his name with an easy win, correction , it was easy but also under the 25 minimum time limit .

The pups , on this dismal evening, also were nearly undertime and the shortened whistle might have had a bearing on the result , as it was . a long overdue win for Tom Thumb over siblings , Blondie, Best Mate and Cracksman.

Red Dragon won the non- winners by a couple of lengths from Nashville and the shoeless Zola in third.

On the way home when the maidens finished ,but near enough to see Fireman Sam getting passed on the finish by Meadow Dixie in another short trail.

The pup finish- 18 runners = 18 hound catchers + a few helpers + six catchers , as all pups were in shouting distance, there were , in the zone 30 people +17 hounds ( Cracksman had crossed the line then went AWOL.) One lonely soul bait intact ,lead around shoulders was heard  to say ” Where’s Me Dog ?  bloody amateurs !.

Report.A bit like the proverbial bus, you wait ages for one and along come two. That was the story at Helton when Mrs Brown’s Girls Persian Bay and Palm Bay each broke their duck for the season. The 2016 puppy champ had been knocking at the door and deserved her first win after an injury plagued season, she got the better of Miterdale Steel and a surprised Meadow Josie in third ( hound wasn’t surprised her owner was) and the same owner vice -chair Paul Airey nearly scuppered Palm Bay’s win , she ran off on the finish preferring the rough ground to the trod , finishing second and in the last it was Meadow Dixie that completed a Ted Rodgers for the Carlisle kennel ( 3-2-1.)

Howgill Annabella won the senior maidens for the Bells of Burneside and Huntsman’s Nimrod made it eight on the trot.

Report. A pleasant afternoon in the Eskdale Valley for the annual puppy Show trails. And getting things underway was Jenny’s Aura who won the senior trail in a hack canter, Marlou was best of the rest in front of the two Miterdales. The senior maidens and a Laidler cast off Sugar Ray obliged for Lisa and Graham , he led at the first road and the last road and where it mattered although Kinniside Bess was closing.

Three pups came through the last gate neck and neck and the stronger finishing Cuckoo Lane won by a length from Forlorn Spring and Babylon.

The last two races featured two close finishes and the Jackson’s of Borrowdale came off worse in both events when, firstly, Foxparke Jewel edged out Bewitched  and then Debra got up on the line to deny Bedazzled in the veterans.

Now on a sad note – commiserations to the Steele family of Low Place on their loss of promising puppy Miterdale Spirit.

One tale for the notebook. a noted supporter of the sitting down brigade of trailers ,said ” Debra has just got beat, when it was quite obvious to all that she had prevailed on the line. On checking her line of view of the finish , cameraman Bill had parked his vehicle in a direct line with the tape, her view was restricted to ,before the line and after the line I can report that nobody argued, they daren’t!!!!!

Report. A pleasant evening on Sandale Hill , well! it was until it hailstoned, A little bit of winter in September. The seniors must have been aware of the impending storm as they  ran the trail in 11 seconds over the minimum time=- Miterdale Shadow winning comfortably from Persian bay and Canny mover.

Huntsman’s Nimrod is quickly putting the puppy championship beyond reach when she notched up win no 23 , coming home clear of Rover with championship challenger Cuckoo Lane back in fifth.

Stephen Irving and West Tip (cast Off ) finally got of the mark when he held on to a slender lead to beat Red Dragon and Amber Bay and Babycham  took the maiden trail by 50 metres from Denton Eclipse and the popular Fireman Sam in third.

Rugby scouts were made aware of a splendid ,flying.tackle  made by yours truly, grabbing his escaping hound with a two handed tackle from behind bringing the errant hound to a stop. a tackle that Lynchy would have been proud of.

Report. It is not often the two ” Jenny s meet, when they do expect  a race, and a race it was , both came “neck-and neck from the last wall, where Aura ran on to  win by four lengths with Marlou in third

Monday mornings washing came to mind as ” Nimrod ” won by the proverbial  “mile “and the second was well clear of the third.

The maidens and one against seven as Senior  Maybe lined up against six juniors, of which Dragonfly was the only one to make a race of it. The two came together on the downward stretch of fell , into the beck, and onto the uphill finish, where Maybe went on to win.

Missed the finish ,of the veterans but at halfway the proverbial blanket would have covered them all as they jigged and jagged there way round.

Report . Loweswater Show in the parish of Lorton if this was centuries ago heads would have rolled instead of which perhaps charging £ 4 for the trails and £6 for the show would be classed as daylight robbery. Some didn’t pay the extra but my family did and didn’t complain but some refused and didn’t go to the show and as they were prepared to spend money whose loss was it !

The trails and ” make hay whilst the sun shines” a proverb relating to get things done now  rather than later and literally speaking that was what happened on the home straight as the local farmer made use of the dry day to harvest a late crop and  in turning the hay after the trail had been laid confusing the hounds and consequently the results can be misleading. That being no compensation for Meadow Josie who lost her maiden tag when she beat the consistent Sweet Harmony by a head. Mine won the Puppy Maidens when finishing alone .Baba O’Riley was one of four that were  first to put themselves right in the juniors. And in the last trail in an upside down programme  Jenny’s Delight kept up her championship challenge with a five length victory over Persian Bay.

Veterans 1 Westgate Belle 2 Capetown 3 Aspire 4 Debra 5 Miterdale Prim 6 Flawless . 10 Ran Time 18.10.

Report. No Bookie but an able sub ,pool bet on the five events and contributed £40 to the funds.

In the seniors the paper favourite was Jenny’s Aura but money made Miterdale Shadow an 11/8 shot and he duly obliged , last seasons puppy champ beating the previous season’s champ General James, comfortably.

And another favourite obliged in the juniors when Windermere named , Grange owned Cuckoo Lane finished alone .

That’s Showbiz as the non-winner made the long journey from Wigton a memorable one , as he collected a winning bet for his owner ( enough to buy a pint) lost his non – winner tag before the opportunity to go for a bigger pot in a few weeks time as they say in Hollywood ” That’s Showbiz” she  was followed by Kinniside Molly who in the words of the owner ” will never win”.

Three down two to go the books level then “bingo” the last two go unbacked at a returned SP of 20/1 apiece, Huntsman’s Jenny holding off the challenge of Hawkswood and the veterans was won by Westgate Belle , the only one to keep to the trail on the finish. Lowick Show about three fields away, the local pub was beyond reach ( the road was under repair) but the intrepid kinnisiders found another one frequented by “farmers”.

Veterans 1 Aspire 2 Capetown 3 Night Vision 4 Flawless 5 Westgate Belle 6  MiterdaleProper 9 Ran Time 21.39. Also Ran . Miterdale Prim- free Spirit-.Kerrymore.

REPORT. It was getting dark, a gloomy night , one trail to come and all the way from Cleator came Veteran Night  Vision, a car full of supporters, and named for the occasion but , alas . he aspired to no better than third, still a four pointer , better than nowt and what more a journey through the lakes to a delightful venue overlooking Windermere and in the distance the lights of Morecambe, that ‘s for those who stayed behind for the sing song led by chairman Baz, ” Two wheels on my wagon and I’m just rolling along”

The seniors and a change of trail led to a right mix up on the homeward turn, hounds were going in all directions heads up, no signposts , but it is intriguing how they all ended up on the finish. Marlou beating Lady Anne and Miterdale Shadow.

Now it was no secret that the pup trail was going to take part over much of the locals practice ground and like the seniors would they guess, As it happens none of them had run the last section but had spent all winter learning their trade on various sections of the trail . the answer they never put a foot wrong and finished 123, ahead of the unfortunate Huntsman’s Pair who lost ground at the start.

Super Sun not Super Stition that’s us on 13.

A note the road may have been resurfaced and the temptation to go a little faster might be there but that rock just before the entrance would stop a tank and it did!

Grasmere Sports Sun Aug26th 2018

Pups 1 Cuckoo Lane 2 Huntsman’s Novice 3 Best Mate.4 Galway Lass 5 Super Sun 6 Dragonfly .15 Ran Time 20.04.

Open Restricted 1 Jenny’s Breeze 2 Huntsman’s Jenny 3 Manna 4 Huntsman’s Noel 5 Foxparke Jewel 6 Dawn  16 Ran Time 17.20.

Veterans 1 Capetown 2 Night Vision 3 Cherish 4 Flawless 5 Foxparke Yabadabadoo 6 Foxparke So Be It 10 Ran Time 18.10.

Seniors 1 Jenny’s Delight 2 Bedazzled  3 Overwater Hally 4 Ladybird 5 Marlou 6 Lone Rebel  7 Ran Time. 31.42.

Report. Grasmere Sports incorporating the Fell Derby ( according to Grasmere Sports ) attracting only 7 runners nevertheless providing an exciting finish between Jenny’s Delight and Bedazzled the former beating the veteran by a length, Nothing was seen of the race as the mist had shrouded the fells but the crowd got its £12 worth of excitement in the opening event one hour before the sports opened when everybody’s Best Mate stopped hallway across the arena and then turned around and headed back up the trail, no amount of shouting or in my case blasphemy could persuade him  to finish and as he messed about his brother Benny aka Cuckoo Lane and Huntsman’s Novice “flew” past to notch the first two places,.

The restricted trail provided an exciting finish and a one two for the Glenridding kennel with Jenny’s Breeze and Huntsman’s Jenny,

And in the veterans Capetown held off the challenge of Night Vision.

A wet , miserable day and the public were still going onto the field as the trailing fraternity were going home but still to come was the wrestling and the Senior Guides Race where there was a £500 inducement for the first person to break Fred Reeves long standing record of 1978, and you couldn’t see halfway up the fell !!
