Report: A pleasant afternoons trailing at Calebreak ,near Hesket New Market, where the only sign of hounds going downhill was on the finish.

And in the seniors ,at the bottom of the hill is where Keith Lynch and Endeavour would have preferred the tape. As it was the final level put a cap on proceedings as he was overtaken by first Lady Bethan and then Galemire Grace whom it was reported to have taken a tumble. These three were well clear of the remainder led in by, first time over the course, Celtic Malone.

The juniors appeared on the top of the finish and in front a ‘red un’ but which one?

By the time they had got to the bottom and levelled out it was all over as John Loan’s Lone Rebel had an unbeatable lead and stretched it even further to the line giving vain chase was Daisy Dream together with Huntsman’s Kraka.

The open maidens and winning this ,and by the way nobody identified it, was Lisa and Susan’s Cool Return, what a refreshing sight to see them in winners enclosure as most of the season has been a ‘labour of love’. Miterdale Force was second, caught by Sophie, after her usual detour, over the line ,turn left , ‘ catch me if you can’.

And in the final event the question was which hound went ‘roly-poly down the hill , was it the first or the second or was ‘Bill or was it Ben’ (joke). Well it was the winner Cherish ,who got up ‘ dressed  herself down and started all over again’ holding off the determined challenge of Two Tone with long time leader Mrs McGregor back in third,

There was only one bookie or was there two?, as the Crones bet all in and without three, John in charge of one set of prices Clare the other. It transpired in the last you could back one hound at 7/1 all in but it was ‘only’ 8/1 without three. No prizes for guessing who was right !

Three hounds gaining their first  wins of the season !

Baz’s Blog end of July.

A quiet week for trails with Monday and Wednesday missing but all roads led to the traditional Ambleside sports on Thursday and the first disappointment was no egg and spoon race ,got the egg ,chewing gum ,left hand only and —– nothing doing!

What was the crack— ‘ Rascal’ took her pads off on Saturday ,couldn’t walk on Sunday – Wins.———- Bedazzled never run here! —– Artist — get in ,ticket hound only ,’ Whas’ is Superstition ‘ Money for it , it would have more chance on Friday the 13th.

There is always one hound that gives the spectators a laugh and yesterday a hound stopped at the road and was rather bemused by the number of people near the trail so it turned around and jumped up giving a complete stranger a lick.

Saying of the week . ‘My hounds are not lame they just have sore feet ‘ Stephanie Steele, much to Tony’s Amusement.

Well done to Nicola and Co for five out of six at Lorton. The travelling head lad wasn’t too pleased as the one he had backed and was catching ran wide to give his mates more chance.

Just a tip – If you want your hound to run well then – go to Helton – run in the non -winners -struggle to catch it then watch it go around again– rest – and turn out at the sports -back it without three and ‘Bobs your Uncle’.

There is no foundation in the rumour that wool used in the making of Carlisle and Penriths rags  came from the Egremont woollen Mill and not from the Edinburgh woollen mill ( explanation see Ken Routledge)

Promoting a trail or baz’s weekly chunter.

In a couple of weeks time the traditional Ings sheep dog trials and hound trails will be taking place. Due to the fact that the Association trails are on the following Saturday and Ings is only a one off trail ,it is poorly supported, but nevertheless ‘the show must go on’.

No problems .so far. until you find out that the environment agency ,as they have done in most of Cumbria, have double-fenced the beck where the trail crosses, in a wet ,rushy place, giving the hounds no chance to jump.

Consequently this entire section has to altered,. So the promoter has to plan a new route before he shows the trailer ( speaking from experience). Due to the different line now taken over a mile of the trail has to be changed.

All goes well until the last 50 yards when a bracken bed is encountered over six foot high with most of it folded with the rain making practically impossible to walk through, especially a ‘blue badger’ . Now,you might say ‘go around it’ .There is no way around and in hindsight I shouldn’t have gone in. BUT!

‘It is a trail and the only way to go from A to B is right through the middle.

So there I am in the middle of a bracken bed – STUCK ! It took me half an hour to get so far in and damn near as long to get out.

All this hassle, plus the fact that the two trailers have to take the day of work and one is still to be shown the finish, makes you think.!

Now, I’m not on my own in having to work hard in ensuring there are still venues and ‘what’s more creating new venues but any more abuse ( criticism ,yes! ) but ignorant verbal abuse and there will be one less.

Rant over! It has been a week of ‘catch that hound’ as hounds with coats and leads were running loose plus those who refuse the bait tin and attempt to carry on.

So we have ‘tackle of the week’ Brian Graham stopping Tempress in her tracks by what can only described as ‘grab and lift’ .It was remarked he could get a game for Workington to which one aficionado  replied ‘he doesn’t have to tackle ,just turn up and he’ll get a game.

It was heartening to see some young uns laying trails this week ,a fourteen and twenty one year  old at Westward and a young farmer at Cold Fell.

Nicola Napier and team had 14 runners at  Lamplugh on Monday ,They got £11 in prize money ,suppose it could be counted as a tax loss?

Just a thought is there a copyright on colour recognition because Bracelet ran on Wednesday ,the ‘colour purple’.

Nothing to do with trailing ,but on Friday John Crone treated my grandson with a ride on the Northern line, it transpired that he was the driver on the very train we chose and sat him in the drivers seat and let him ‘blow the horn’, he is only two and a half . Ta John ,by the way it’s a good job there are rails [ a directional joke)

The Association trails are at  Uldale Common -turn left / right on the Uldale rd, depending which way you are travelling,  at the Orthwaite junction.

Statement from the Chairman.

Subject : Huntsman’s Kooga.

The Committee heard the evidence including that of the representatives of the Cockermouth and Workington area , the owner and the Chairman.. They took appropriate action and from it lessons will be learnt.

Having said that – It’s a sport enjoyed by many including myself BUT ,and I am in favour of free speech, I am not involved, to be cold- shouldered ,subject of petitions,. Life is to short , it’s time that the niggling ,backbiting attitude was removed from the trail field . I Know I can’t make you all one big family but a bit of give and take isn’t hard! is it?

Chair HTA

Baz’s Blog.

The Gateman at Kirkstone trails and a nicer man you’d wish to meet, ex church warden, former Mayor but a tad old fashioned . On Wednesday he was on the gate using his pockets as a bag . ‘John’ here use this ‘bum’ bag for change.’ What’s a bum bag’?  he replied

I showed him the bag and he promptly hung it around his neck. Practical !

On the same evening and the senior trailer , on the easy side of sixty five, appeared on the start ,nearly buck-naked, the ladies were well impressed .

Neil wasn’t  happy to lose his restricted class with ‘Night Vision, He should have got dad to catch it!   He could stop a clock!  ( its a joke )

Had occasion to interview the Tunstalls  -the interview is on the website somewhere ,just scroll around until you find it! That’s what I did!

Cathy Lister reckons she has the best looking trailhound anybody disagree ,tell her not me, I’m just the messenger !

Pity about the maidens at Kirkland but it did have its lighter moment’ As the hounds made there way up the fell away from the field , one; out of breath, owner appeared on the road , strained his neck and let out a noise ‘Rooster ,Rooster, Rooster.

Rooster by this time was about to disappear from sight. I turned to Jack who was still insisting on shouting, and said ‘ we couldn’t catch them crossing the road nevermind trying to turn them around , a ,good, quarter of a mile away.

He looked -‘ well ,it was worth a try’, he said, now there goes somebody who cares , the ever optimistic Englishman.

Bought a battery charger ,come in handy on Saturday ,started our lads car , then mine wouldn’t start and the new charger -flat as a pancake. Just a thought , the charger comes with a lead to the cigarette lighter, but if the battery is flat how does it charge a flat charger? it’s not a joke –yet!

Missing Hound

Zac , A black and white hound with brown ears , Male, missing from trails in the  Ennerdale- Buttermere  and surrounding areas. Please keep a lookout and if seen contact; 07711 088697.

The way I see the Festival week.

Last weeks dog produce provided Les and Jeanette with a real lift that they thoroughly deserve when Remember Me (everytime I log on) won . Apparently the greeting party for Les made his’ leg twitch’ and the ‘news’ had them married.

You have to be careful when your typing ,last week I pressed the K key instead of The L for Full House ,good job I checked it before printing.

Watch out there is a scout about- wasn’t sure where the seniors crossed the fell road and nearly missed them ,literally.

Irish Pride is in front was the report from Ward Hall – the only time (apart from Nw at Bridekirk) she has been in front is when I braked hard and she shot from the back seat to the front seat of my car.. By the way the best looking trailhound is Time Traveller, according to Cathy Lister. They must have held the competition in the Tardis.

Not a very good week ,hound wise, second from last and next to last on Thursday night.

Met some first time trailers at Helton backed Where’s Wallie, tipped them Jazz Singer ( What do I know)

Now , On Saturday at Kirkland I have been reliable informed that they are running left handed and also equally informed they are running right handed. So I have come to the conclusion they will probably run straight on.

By the way there are ten jumps on the senior trail and seven jumps for the juniors ,all railed and all gates will be open.

Good luck to everyone tomorrow !

All roads lead to Waberthwaite on Saturday for the dog Produce, courtesy of the Whitehaven Area. It  is a new venue so I hope all goes well, a lot of time and effort have been spent so it deserves your support.

Last week and ‘follow the signs’ advice was a misnomer. We travelled via Brampton and giving Caroline directions I said ‘follow the signs’! to which she replied ‘what**** ** signs!

Poor Gerard nearly went to Newcastle -the Committee let him run his hound in the restricted trail because it’s a sport and common sense prevailed. What would have been gained by refusing to change grades in the circumstances. Anyway it ran the old dog maiden trail and it ain’t a maiden !

Caroline’s navigational  skills have Improved until Thursday evening ,I woke from a nap to find her flooring it towards Egremont off the A66. I politely inquired we are going to Redmain Caroline you had better turn around or words to that effect.

Winners enclosure first this week Sean Pirie ,David and John with Levitate .

Puzzled look of the week David Hogg ,fourth catcher at Cold Fell, Christine giving directions ‘It went that way’.

Quote of the week ‘Bring back the Colonel’  ‘quick march you are all in detention.’

If you see an Eagle Flying over and about the trail field – it is Billy Birkett in disguise !

Dare I say but the PA system is working – the only trouble is the car must be turning over.In the two times it has been tried this season not one person suggested turning the engine on.!

By the way for Eagle read Red Kite!

I was going to write another song but I was told to stop winding up Ian Donaldson, just because I give Marlou a ‘pat’

But I did start – Daisy,Daisy give me your answer do.

My name’s John Toni Palmer

And I’am so in love with you.

Executive meeting Sun June 28th.

ON the agenda.

1. Incident at Buttermere regarding allegation of vice by Huntsman’s Kooga..

. They inquired into why the hound was re-homed rather than destroyed and accepted the mitigating circumstances that surrounded the case. No blame was apportioned to the Cockermouth and Workington area Committee but a tightening of procedure was advised to all area Chairs.

2  A complaint was read out re the change of result at Ward Hall on Thurs June 18th when he altered his original decision from Barton first and Blueboy second to Blueboy winning. It was alleged that the time limit for the Judges decision was ‘up’ and he shouldn’t have altered it. The Judge explained in detail why there was confusion over the result and in his defence said that he was only putting right what in his opinion was wrong. He apologised for any wrongdoing and as a consequence will be stepping down from Judging.

3 The 200 draw is under way and hopefully it will be a success.

4 A letter was sent to the Secretary of the Border HTA regarding the attitude and behaviour of their  president involving one of our junior members. It was felt that an apology was forthcoming and we await their response.

5 Also discussed  was  the behaviour of members of both Associations and the Committee will be monitoring this behaviour at future meetings. It was also remarked that as this was the ‘International’ then all complaints should be addressed to the International  Committee.

6 The Committee welcomes venues  for the Association trails in August but it points out that due to a policy of early booking it has booked that Saturday for Uldale Common.

5  The Committee is also looking into the  possibility of providing perpetual trophies for all the major trails.

HTA 200 club draw.

HTA 200 CLUB DRAW .

The way I see it ( A lighter look at last weeks trailing)

Funny old game ,an old saying applicable to hound trailing. Take the river Ehen at Wath Brow cause of many upsets over the years. Monday evening and ‘Jack’ had gone in but hadn’t come out. Malcolm Holmes was getting frustrated as shouted ;’Jack ,Jack,  Jack’ to know avail. Why ? don’t you shout Ann , I remarked , so she did ; once, ‘Jack’ and Jack climbed out of the beck and up the finish . Women power !.

At the same meet and jovial Sean Pirie got his first ticket of the season.

‘Sixth hound ? Celtic Spirit !

No! Keltic Spirit – now remember Sean’s are hard C and Gerard’s are soft C.

And, once again at the ‘Brow’ ,have you ever wondered how Nicola Napier remembers all her hounds names or which one is which. Well wonder no more because she was shouting for the third on Monday – wrong pet name -wrong hound.  She should know her hounds – they are coloured in purple !!!!.

On a final note – There was a cracking view from Cold Fell including the Isle of Man, Scotland, and west Cumbria. James  remarked on it too but still preferred it in the dark! ( it’s a joke)

International on Saturday – all roads lead to Wintershields ( one does)

Viewing isn’t great but all hound catchers will go to the finish in anticipation of a ticket because they will not know whether they are first or last. Ok! it is not ideal but it’s what we’ve got and I hope we have a successful days sport.

To Judge or not to Judge? that is the question! Replaced on Tuesday , back on Wednesday. Saturday? probably the pup trail – no interest !  ( it’s a joke)

Kendal, Produce day and Arizona and Trooper Thorn won for the Cockermouth and Workington area so; come Wednesday at Redmain , up popped Kendal hounds Venus and Razzle Dazzle, to even the score.

.On the ball at Kendal,on Sunday, was James Batty ,kenner of hounds.Coming up the finish I thought I was at a different venue ( its a joke) He did get an odd one right.

Finally I’m delving into song writing so the tune of ‘don’t cry for me Arizona.’

Don’t cry for me I’m the owner.T

Truth is I never paid.

All through my trailing days

My mad existence.

He kept his promise.

To win by a distance.

Next week ‘ Daisy Dream’ ( it’s a joke)

The Chairman.

Message from the Judge regarding Thursday’s nights result at Ward Hall.

Rule. 64.3 .The Judge may call upon the camera to help him arrive at a decision. He has five minutes to correct any error at the end of each trail.

The onus here is — What constitutes the END OF A TRAIL.

In this instance The Judge gave a decision without the aid of the camera. Immediately after the decision was given the camera was back in action. The Judge then reviewed the finish, decided his first decision might be incorrect . By this time most people had left the field, including the sole bookmaker ,the area Committee and promoting body.

As far as the Judge is concerned his main priority is to get the right result and if he is still on the field and still consulting the camera then it is not the END.!

The camera revealed ,in the Judges opinion, that Blueboy had prevailed by a small margin and the Judges opinion is final.
