Report

By gum it was a raw night up Miterdale even the kettle wouldn’t boil.

In the Seniors Songbird was made favourite with Marli second in the betting and it was the latter that prevailed by a fast diminishing two metres from her sister Galemire Grace. Here I like to point out,as somebody keeps reminding me, the first two last night and the first three the evening before all fully related.

That’s for Kenny ( now maybe he’ll shut up).

The Pup trail and ‘Daisy’ scored the sixth win of the season but not before and I quote” the lighter coloured of the two black un’s ‘ had squandered a lead.

On reflection  that would be Thorn Dancer who finished third behind her sister Bewitched- Silver Charm was fourth  and they were clear of the rest led in by ‘Kooga’

The open Restricted and this was a resounding win for Where’s Wally, who responding to Barbara’s unique ‘call’ finished well clear of Mickledore.

Young Mark was a catcher and responding  to ‘first hound’ , ‘Where’s Wally’, looked all around sporting a big grin.

Report

A sunny day but a biting wind for the second visit to Helton.

In the Seniors Acacia scored her second win of the season for Ed and Lisa Crosby at the expense of Aspire and the improving Explore ( see video on you tube for hounds crossing last road)

Plan B led across the road in the Senior Maidens but he couldn’t hold off the fast finishing Barrow Bitch Willow Bay, another winner for the inform kennel of Norman and Lynn Brown and in third kennelmate Another Bay.
In the Juniors it was a three dog race and Bracelet got up on the line to deny the Browns another winning double, sisters Persian Bay and Sky second and third with Arizona ( Harry’s Owner) a closing fourth.

The Puppy Maidens and here was an opportunity for hounds to gain their first ticket notable Kaiser owned by Darren the camera man, Paloma Faith and Mystery Girl. The winner Chinook ,owned by our secretary Margaret and trained by the Holmes of Skelton won by a head and if you are a believer in coincidence then it was windy and a helicopter flew over the trail field.

The all-in were well spread out – the fittest at the front-the fattest at the back-no change there. Complaints in writing to Russel Dawson

Report

A dry but nippy day greeted hound trailers to the first of the season at Cold Fell.

And once more not without controversy ,although the trail has been used successfully for years the layout of the trail is a cause for concern and in fairness to everybody this should be addressed.

The seniors and when they showed opposite the field ,prominent were a number of ‘gingers’ which ones, at a guess Marli, Endure,Try Again, Endeavour, TanTed interspersed with the odd black ‘un ,Galemire and Sam. Onto the finish and here Marli threw away a winning chance leaving the door open for Songbird but they didn’t reckon with Night Vision who got up on the line and then avoided Joe ,as usual.

The pups handled the trail well with both of the Huntsmans cutting out the early pace closely attended by the favourite Daisy Dream.  Down the hill onto the finish and here Jazz Band led but he couldn’t hold off Daisy from registering a fifth win.

In the third race Persian Sun set a scorching pace and together with Doll and Cartier drew clear of the field- Cartier won by five metres with the third ten metres back ,they finished well clear of the fourth Mr Ant.

Flawless won the final event comfortably from Rickman and Get Up, fourth was ‘Wally’ who drove at half way.

Report

A second visit in a week to Miterdale and it was all change in some of the results much to the relief of the solitary bookie.

In the seniors Debra shot to the front in the final 30 metres to beat Marli who just held on from Capetown. What a difference, in four days ,from winning the maidens on Saturday to a Senior win on Wednesday,. As a pup in 2013 she had 43 places 4 of which were open wins. You might like to note that last years joint pup champion Songbird was fourth making it a 1-2-3-4 for the Westmorland hounds.

The Junior trail and a close finish and once more ‘Kracka’ won but only by a head from Daisy Dream with the third ,fourth, fifth close up.

The open Maidens and here a return to winning ways for Tagget, winner of fourteen trails as a 2010 pup and eleven senior trails in 2011 plus an International. and Bitch Produce . She held on from the enigmatic Miterdale Force,, whose antics on the finish are frustrating, but to the delight of Sophie she never faltered,  third and fourth were in close attendance. Quite a few of the runners got low on the fell and consequently struggled -they made their way back in ‘ones and twos’ .

93 runners on a Wednesday night, good going. And a note for future trails at Low Place–Alfie has dug a small grave on the field with a cross -I don’t know what’s buried there but it is too small for his ***********.

Report

A fine ,sunny night for the first of the Lazonby trails and the tea van didn’t run out of food. Fourteen in the seniors and the  early pace was set by Aspire ,the hounds deftly avoided the pigs who according to information provided had been ‘nicked’ .Somebody inquired ‘what kind of pigs’ answer two big un’s and some laal un’s. Onto the finish and JLS, confirming Sundays form ,got up in the  final strides to pip Jenny’s Choice. I’m not sure about the J but L S ‘might it be Laura Steele ,that is if I’ve got the script right.( see video on you tube) The pup trail and here Arizona showed his rivals a ‘clean pair of heels’ winning nicely although it has to be said they were four minutes slower than the All-In-nevertheless it compares favourable with times for the first trail at Lazonby for pups in the past. The all-in provided an excellent finish with Razzle Dazzle a head in front of Westgate Gypsy.

Report

Firstly I would like to compare the number of hounds running over this weekend with 1975,40 years ago, then 242 ran.

This weekend 221 ran ,not bad for a sport in decline. I know that trailing has seen better days but the ref hasn’t started counting yet!

Helton, and for a number of kennels the season started today- including Black eyed pea , first run and a win over J L S who led over the last road contrary to the commentary.

All the trails provided excellent fare and typical of Helton -nothing altered much on the uphill finish.

The pups had an early throw and one or two ran wide before the last road but on the whole the results were an indication of the excellent trails.

In the all-in former champ Dairy  Diamond ran -from one of the kennels making a belated start to the season

By the way who ever put the cup on my rear wiper- it was still there when I got home.

Report

Last Saturday it was Many Clouds today there wasn’t a cloud in the sky for our first venture into Miterdale and eventually Low Place.

John Crone had answered a ‘will you come call’ ( Bookie) and after the well backed Serenity had romped home in the Seniors things didn’t look to rosy,

but the rest of the meet wasn’t so bad.

In the Senior Maidens Trooper Thorn and Debra were well clear and just as well as they both missed the last wall gap as they straightened up Debra finished fast to deny a wandering ‘Trooper’ a win.

The pups and here ‘knowledge can be a dangerous thing’ as all of them ,without the exemption of two, went on the practice trail. The two Huntsmans gained a sizeable advantage and despite a valiant attempt by the odds on Daisy Dream they held on for a one – two for the Glenridding kennel.

In the restricted trail Thorn Dolly finished well to deny local Miterdale one by a length to register a double for Kentmere Kennel of Burrows/ Satterthwaite.

Fifteen old timers in the last and the destiny of the bookies hopes  were in the balance up to the line where Night Shadow nipped Da Look much to the his delight.

A pleasant days trailing made better by one owners delight on finding out his hound had finished sixth.

A fine night getting colder greeted trailers to the final trail at Bower House for the early season meets.

The Senior trail provided us with four hound finish where Fireman Sam came from fourth place to show in front through the last gate and held on over the fast finishing Galemire with last weeks winner Serenity and favourite Try Again in fourth.

The Junior trail gave a first open success to both the Jacksons Bewitched and the Patterdale hound ‘ Kooga’ the Judge couldn’t separate them.

Daisy Dream looking for a five timer was back in fourth. It was reported last week that she was named after a perfume- true said one wag you get it on the market.

The non-winners and another close finish between last weeks two second finishers Chavenel and Mickledore the former getting the nod by a head.

Onto the final event-I suppose you could call it the trail nobody wants to win and tonight was no exception judging by Neils  face when congratulated on his win. The Judge.once again had to consult the camera and a head denied the ‘ Oldcorn clan’ a double.

Well done to the promoters for a fortnights ‘Bower’ trails 387 runners close finishes. drama spiced with humour. and thanks to Steve for the field which came close to being prematurely ploughed.

PS. Who caught the  wrong hound, bait. lead. and away. clue?

A cold and breezy night greeted followers to the third meet at Bower House.

Only twelve Seniors faced the starter in the seniors, nevertheless, it proved to be an exiting contest.  After ten minutes, very little separated the first four. Led by ‘Galemire’ – Fireman Sam the odds-on favourite took up the lead onto the fell.  As they approached the finish it was Celtic Malone from Serenity but in the final stride Serenity put her head in front with the third, fourth and fifth close behind.

In the Junior trail, ‘Daisy’ scored her third course win making it a winning double for the Donaldson kennel- Bewitched ran a promising race in second with Menorah in third.  Daisy Dream carries on the kennels tradition of ‘perfumed names’.

Jimmy Nik (James Nicholas on Sunday) showed his liking for the course with a fast diminishing three metre victory over Mickledore in the maidens.

And in the open restricted 2010 puppy Champion Westgate Gypsy won easily- that is the second hound in a week to lose its maiden tag in a restricted trail.

There are three videos on you tube the final race wasn’t aired .

On a fine, sunny evening, it was a pleasure to be in Borrowdale for the first of the Keswick area trails. Only five faced the starter for the Seniors. Three from the same kennel and Langdale Ranger showed his rivals a clean pair of heels winning by the proverbial mile. The fifth hound finishing as the pups were about to slip.

The juniors and favourite Daisy Dream notched her third win of the season when she beat ‘Kooga’ by twenty metres. Although visibility was hazy, it seemed that some of the leaders ran wide on the fell and put themselves out of the race. What were they? not sure but one was a ‘red’un’.

Thirty runners in the open maidens and the Grahams (nearly) Tommy’s Legacy had an easy victory over much travelled Jimmy Nic.

The All-in provided the closest finish of the evening with just a couple of yards separating the first three. As we finished for the evening and one hound missing – I was directed to the road crossing with ‘lookout for the only scots pine’. Found the crossing place and half expected  ‘Laurel and Hardy’.
